ADSL Speeds vary, how to diagnose.

Hello,

For the last couple of months my PN 1MB has been up and down. When at its worse I get arounf 100KB/s. I was told to log off, change user/pass logon to BT, check speed, do this etc. etc. Is this the only way to diagnose the errors if there are any.

This is the Last speed tests i've done

17-02-2005 00:19:33 273

I've reset my router plenty of times, I have also tried 3 different ones, and all the same results, so I believe its not my hardware.

Thanks for any info.

The figures you are quoting are pretty low tbh for a 1Mb line.

Are you getting any other problems, such as the line disconnecting?

Have you changed the mtu at all? I assume while performing these tests you had no other software accessing the internet.

Sorry for the slow reply.

Not noticed any disconnections to behonest, i'm normally connected for upto nearly two weeks, but i have started restarting my router regulary.

I have nothing running using bandwidth.

I have contacted PN again regarding this issue, and they have run tests and show there is no issues with the line or service, only that the VP Exchange is showing red, and BT have a ETA of 10th May. And that nothing can be done til then, does this mean I will have to (hopefully not) suffer at max 200kb/s for another month, whilst paying for 1mb Sad

The VP on my exchange is showing as Red. My 1mb line slows down quite a bit when a lot of people are online, but gets better as people go offline late at night etc. BT will get around to fixing it eventually. Theres not a lot plusnet can do. As the exchanges are BT's domain, unless your lucky enough to have LLU exchange.

You can check your exchange from here (basic info):

mm, Thing is, must of my browsing and downloading is done between 10pm and 2am, and the speed tests at 2am come up at <200kb/s.

I wouldn't have thought that 2am would be a busy time, and if people start scheduling their downloads at off-peak times then its going to be slower at night than through the day.

And friend on the same exchange about .9km closer to the exchange than me has no issues at all, downloads at ~540kb/s all day and all night (512 service).

My neighbour told me the other day they had signed up for BB with Wannado, I wonder if this might have cause some issue.
