3 second ping?

I've just been connected to Plus, and for some reason the connection is atrocious. I'm pinging www.yahoo.co.uk and the average response time is somewhere around 2 to 2.5 seconds. I've tried the exchange checker in User Tools, and the exchange is showing as red, with an expected fix date of yesterday, but the ping still seems excessive.

This is the result of a tracert to www.plus.net:

Tracing route to portal.plus.net [212.159.8.137]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

3 2307 ms 2466 ms 2489 ms ge1-0-0-902.ptn-gw2.plus.net [212.159.1.156]

8 2729 ms 2119 ms 1242 ms portal.plus.net [212.159.8.137].

Does that seem right to anyone else? Unfortunately, I've only been home to try it in the evening, so I'm not sure what it's like during the day.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could improve matters? Oh, I'm connecting through a Netgear DG834 router, which I've just upgraded to the latest firmware, if that makes any difference.

3 second ping?

Try disconnecting and reconnecting ADSL a few times and see if it returned to normal.

You may have been put on a congested pipe (see the service status announcements for this) wich can cause excessively slow connections and high ping rates.

You may want to use WinMTR which will also show packet loss figures.

It could also indicate a problem at your exchange (contention) or a problem within BT's network (between your router/modem and the first plusnet router.

The key words here are expected date Cool

Are you confident that the exchange has been upgraded?
IT could be that BT are behind with the upgrade. It may be better to defer judgment untill the exchange checker stops showing red.
