2mb Service Drop...

Hi there,

Some of those speeds are pretty poor.

What does the exchange checker show?

Are those tests from the BT speed tester?

Run a couple of BT Speed tests and post the results.

That will identify if the problem is BT or Plus Net.

2mb Service Drop...

Hi

Speed test ran and looks perfect!

Im on a small exchange probably about 100 users

Results:

1946 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

1950 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Perfect results for 2mb!!

Ran Plusnet Bandwidth today...

12-08-2005 13:52:02 1942.3
12-08-2005 12:52:50 1928.2

Hmm..... contention? Traffic shaping?... Any help would be great!

As both sets of results are good today, its hard to know what the previous issue was.

If it happens again, run both BT and PN speed tests and add them to the post.

Service bad again today

Exchanges show all clear

Plusnet Bandwidth Checker:
Date Speed Achieved (kbps)
13-08-2005 11:48:26 1301.8
13-08-2005 11:44:58 1205.7
13-08-2005 11:44:42 1133.7

BT Speedcheck
1232 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

985 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

1009 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Guess the problem is with BT.... What do you think?

Thanks for all the help!

Yip. looks like an exchange / contention issue. Unfortunately your speeds arent quite bad enough yet for BT to sit up and take notice.

Keep an eye on it and log the speeds. If it worsens then report it.

Thanks for the quick reponse....

Are you talking network congestion or exchange congestion? Seriously, I live in a tiny village and the exchange serves at a guess 200 houses and about 6 businesses (one of which is mine)

I presume it will have to go sub 400 for BT to react?

Yea, BT's limits are rediculous. I think it was about 500 on a 2mb connection which is just totally stupid.

Exchange contention.

Even though you may be on a small exchange, it only takes a couple of bandwidth leechers to cause problems for everybody. It could of course be a problem with the ecchange itself. BT arent too quick at providing current exchange information.

And yes, BT wont really move until your speeds hit less than 400, pitiful as that may be.

2mb Service Drop...

Mark, Hi

During the day, from home and from testing at work everything seems fine which kinda leads me to believe that this is down to exchange contention

Tried the tests a few mintues ago and they were pretty naff, sub 900. Will try them late tonight! And there I was starting to get an a$$ with plus net, seems its not them at all!!

So, is each exchange allocated a set bandwidth and does it change with the amount of users connected?

I.e... Exchange with an estimated 500 users will be given lesser bandwidth than exchange with 2000?

Hi,

Exchange capacity will vary depending on the number of customer it supplies. A small rural exchange will not have the same capacity as one in a large town.

BT have on occasions misjudged projected capacity on some exchanges, therefore if uptake is high customers can experience problems.

You can only hope that BT realise that there are issues with your exchange and upgrade it fairly quickly. In addition and as I mentioned earlier, you maybe unlucky to have a number of high bandwith users on your exchange who are downloading all there is to download from the internet. This will have a detrimental effect on everybody elses speed at that exchange.

Out of interest, if one user on the exchange is hogging bandwidth, what do BT do?
