would lowering my snr give me any more download speed

Probably, but why is it high - you need to determine that first and fix it?
If you do the SNRM should adjust automatically and speed increase, maybe to over 3mbps.

had a fault at the exchange a few months back when my connection was dropping constantly but all sorted now hasn't dropped connection since.i was with aol before and was getting 3-3.5 actual download speed syncing about 4.5

In that case tell PN the facts and suggest that you may have a "stuck profile" that needs to be reset.
