network saturated overnight?

I've noticed how incredibly slow my connection is in the early hours when bandwidth is "free". I'm only pulling down a maximum of 150 kB/sec at 5am and plenty of lagging. Does this mean the pipes are really filling up with people downloading mass quantities of files when they are sleeping? When the free period ends my connection goes back to full speeds of around 700 kB/sec and nothing lags.
If the network is getting swamped maybe it's time to implement a FUP for the free overnight use too?

Re: network saturated overnight?

Hi there,
Sounds like something might be wrong specifically on your line. The network has at least 30% free space at the that time of the night. Have a look at the third graphs down on this page and you can see it isn't network congestion causing this...

Re: network saturated overnight?

I wonder if there could be a number of people on your exchange hammering it overnight?

Re: network saturated overnight?

I don't think it's a local exchange problem. I have a Zen connection on my primary line on the same exchange and that is still running at full speed 24x7.

Re: network saturated overnight?

Could this be a problem with the particular PN gateway you are connected to?

Re: network saturated overnight?

Actually, I made a schoolboy error and misread some of our graphs.
We can't see anything obviously wrong, but Dave's looking into this over the course of this afternoon and we'll keep monitoring the situation.

Re: network saturated overnight?

Well something is definitely off.
I just disconnected my plus.net line for 15 minutes (web speeds were 100KB/s)
Connected to my Zen line and downloads were running full speed
Just reconnected my plus.net line and it's now running full speed again.
I assume the 20-25 minutes would have allowed me to connect to a different gateway?

Re: network saturated overnight?

I also don't think I should be seeing full download speeds at 4pm. Isn't this when the full affect of traffic shaping should have kicked in?

Re: network saturated overnight?

It depends on the product and the amount that you're paying us.
This table shows how the different rate limits on advanced traffic are being applied during different times of the day.
HTTP speeds should always be prioritised though.

Re: network saturated overnight?

Well suddenly I've been taken back down to 140KB/s again. Smiley

Re: network saturated overnight?

What's the 140KB/s that you're referring to?
Is that on P2P speeds?  HTTP speedtests?

Re: network saturated overnight?

HTTP downloads. I don't use P2P.
The 140KB/s download completely saturates the connection too. Everything else lags with it going on in the background.

Re: network saturated overnight?

Okay, that doesn't sound right at all.
Do you get decent results running the BT Speedtester with nothing else running in the background?

Re: network saturated overnight?

Here's the speed test results:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 832 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6384 kbps
Why is the IP profile set to 7000 kbps? I should be able to achieve the maximum on my line. It's right next to the exchange and the line stats were described as exceptional when I signed up. Smiley
