how can I protect my DSL from storms

if its true
that if I surge protect my dsl, Its a waste of my time and will just drop my  SNR and raise my attenuation slightly.
should   i switch  it off , wait and let the storm fade ?

you can switch it off if you want, the odd 10 000 volt lightnig strike might with bad luck miss

Re OP:  I always power down if there's lightning about; the DSLAM won't mind one clean break, but could well throw a wobbly during a storm.

just been looking through my Italian photo's, thought I had a daytime pic of a strike on a power cable outside our Garage, it hit the cable near a pole, travelled down the wire and blew up a transformers about 100 Metre from us

some  fireworks
and i did earlier read on the  net
of a one wire internet with  a floating earth
that  still worked (not recommended)
creating a gap like a sparking plug

used to use an adaptor on CB radio - a heavy adaptor with solid pins instead of wire, small gap and a side contact that you wired down to earth with a heavy cable.  never had a hit.
But no use at all for telephone.
Neighbour across the road had a hit on theirs, blew up a lot in the house, phones, router etc

the consensus is to switch the router off together with pc
and to remove their power plugs from the wall  sockets

understood and to make sure that my router is protected I will unplug both
both the power cable from the wall and the adsl cable form the bt phone socket
