how can I protect my DSL from storms

that if I surge protect my dsl, Its a waste of my time and will just drop my SNR and raise my attenuation slightly.
should i switch it off , wait and let the storm fade ?

Re OP: I always power down if there's lightning about; the DSLAM won't mind one clean break, but could well throw a wobbly during a storm.

and i did earlier read on the net
of a one wire internet with a floating earth
that still worked (not recommended)
creating a gap like a sparking plug

But no use at all for telephone.
Neighbour across the road had a hit on theirs, blew up a lot in the house, phones, router etc

the consensus is to switch the router off together with pc
and to remove their power plugs from the wall sockets
