DAK, can I use a normal wireless router like a Netgear DG834G as a relay on an existing wireless network?

Yes BUT,
If you use WDS ( see here http://www.kerrins.co.uk/blog/2008/08/netgear-dg834g-and-wireless-repeating/ for instructions ) then you cannot use WPA security you must use WEP, which is not very secure.
Alternatively if its possible to connect the DG834G to the primary router via Ethernet ( or HomePlugs ) then you can just use it as a separate Wireless AP with whatever security you wish.

I gave up trying to get WDS to work on my DG834GTs and opted for the homeplug route http://www.unix.ms/netgear/
I recall that if you use WDS it halves the wireless throughput, so 54mb becomes 27mb
