Re: email delays

Have you checked your spam folder (via webmail)?  Since September (at least) mail from PN to PN accounts was being erroneously marked as spam.  As they are still using the old DSPAM (at least for some mail) this may still be happening.

Re: email delays

There might have been some delays on the Critical Path servers (see graphs here) between 10:30am and 12:30pm.  If delays are suspected checking there, the mail queues here and mail sessions here is worth doing.
Links to all those graphs are under Network Performance within portal Help & Support.

Re: email delays

It seems emails were taking around 5 hours to go through the PN system yesterday afternoon. I was setting up an email account with O2 and sent a couple of messages to both my Gmail & PN accounts. The Gmail arrived almost immediately but the PN messages (posted just after 2pm) arrived early evening. I've pasted  the header for one of those messages below (my details removed):

Re: email delays

Hi Paul,
Looks like it was delayed on one of the Critical path boxes. This seems odd to me as the graphing isn't indicative of any problems at the time the message was sent Huh
I've raised a problem (47964) so this can be investigated. Has anyone else any similar examples?
Edit: You'll notice that there was some activity on the graphs yesterday. There was also a blip just before lunchtime that saw the queues rise to about 60,000.
After checking some of our internal graphing we found that there were massive increases in the volume of outbound SMTP connections during the periods of time when there was activity on the portal graphs.

After a bit of further digging we found that one of the log files was full of smtp connection errors for relay07.
Critical Path is smart hosted to one of our relay servers which is then used to handle bounced messages. This was one of the precautionary measures we took to prevent a re-occurrence of some of the problems encountered during the first roll-out attempt.
/var was full on relay07. Once we'd fixed that, everything returned to normal but it's completely possible that this may have delayed some legitimate email Sad
We would have picked up on this problem a lot quicker had our monitoring picked it up over the weekend but sadly we had some issues with this too!
I wouldn't expect anybody to be experiencing delays now but anything sent over the last 24 hours may have been subject to problems.

Re: email delays

Well I've just repeated the test I done yesterday, O2 to Plusnet, and delivery took 10 minutes - not sure if thats classed as normal as I've never timed an email before but, for the record O2 to Gmail takes less than a minute

Re: email delays

Hi all, I have had 2 messages stuck in my outbox that won't send - only small files incidently, getting error message 0x8004210B the operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMPT) server, is there a problem with email?

Re: email delays

This one is from the CCGI server was delayed 10 minutes and (strangely) did not go through Critical Path.
The header section where the delay occurred:
Quote
Received: from ptb-cgirelay01.plus.net ([195.166.130.40])
by fhw-sunmxcore06.plus.net with esmtp (PlusNet MXCore v2.00) id 1Iu8Xo-0003Bv-4t
                for xxx@mydomain.co.uk; Mon, 19 Nov 2007 15:28:16 +0000
Received: from [212.159.7.151] (port=46493 helo=ccgi02.force9.net)
by ptb-cgirelay01.plus.net with esmtp (Exim 4.34)
id 1Iu8Ob-00006w-Fa for xxx@mydomain.co.uk; Mon, 19 Nov 2007 15:18:45 +0000

I thought all the boxes were behind Critical Path. Perhaps that does not apply to emails generated by the CCGI server.

Have you tried deleting the emails in your outbox and resending them? Failing that I would temporarily disable your antivirus and Internet Security software and try to make sure they're not misbehaving.
Failing that I'd go for a rebuild of your outbox.dbx file assuming you're using Outlook/Outlook Express.

Only the mx.cores. Email that passes via the mx.lasts does not go via Critical Path.
