email connect failures - intermittent and browsing timeouts

I have got also this fail issue for about 45-60mn and had it during a while yesterday.

changing one of my DNS servers to OpenDNS fixed it but I am not sure if that is the underlying problem

I can confirm that switching my Linux box to use Opendns for DNS resolution also fixed it for me(tm).

The problem appears to be getting worse.   I can't get onto any sites I want.

We have been slowly bringing on line some new POP3/IMAP servers. These should have made things better, though I do know that they were the root cause of some of these issues prior to a Radius connection limit being increased last Tuesday.
To help with getting to the root cause, internally the logs are being looked at, but it would be really appreciated if any information on the length of time required to authenticate could be included. The newer servers should authenticate a lot faster than the older ones due to they do not have certain constraints on databases. Therefore, knowing a rough ideal of the length of time required to fail, or succeed, would help in concentrating efforts on the right machines.

I've just had another 'fail to connect' again but on second attempt it connected straight away

After yesterday's hiccup things seem to be running OK again today

Just had a pop email timeout and then couldn't get to http://www.bbc.co.uk/dorset/news/ but a retry got there immediately

I've had timeouts for a few hours this afternoon but mainly for one site - the O2 Ticketmaster.  I think this could be due to demand for tickets.
