bt speedboost is it possible?

I have jst had an engineer out re another issue during our discussion he said that my line is 11mb to the local cabinet but i am only getting high 5000 to mid 6500. he mentinoed that openreach are doing bt speedboost for customers which will mean an engineer would be charged with getting you the fastest speed possible. I am not that far from the cabinet and the bt engineers equipment also reads suync at 6500 at the house would it be possible and how would i go about it. another 4 or 5 mb would be great.

Re: bt speedboost is it possible?

Hi podman,
That's a new one on me. As for getting 11Mb to the cabinet I think that's irrelevant as your speed is determined from the exchange, not the cabinet.

Re: bt speedboost is it possible?

Hi Podman,
I think the guy is referring to a "Broadband Boost" engineer.  Those guys specialise in internal wiring and such like designed to improve speeds, but it's not a miracle fix.
He's suggesting that you're seeing a 6Mbps drop ion speed from the cabinet to your router - could be a fair stretch of cable from the cab to yours?

Re: bt speedboost is it possible?

HI JoJo,
he said the test from the exchange to the cabinet showed the line at 11mb. it is less than 1/4 mile between house and cabinet, a couple of mins walk.

Re: bt speedboost is it possible?

HI Podman,
The BT system we test on is down at the moment and I wanted to check a couple of things. I'm sure it'll be back up soon so I'll give you an update later.

No problem.
thanks for all your help. In have to say PN are the most helpful company I deal with.

[added] 0.2 of a mile to cabinet, though i realise it might not make the most direct route

Re: bt speedboost is it possible?

HI JoJo,
is the system back up that you mentioned you could use to do a few tests?

Re: bt speedboost is it possible?

Hi Podman,
Having checked the line you're getting more or less the right speed for your line stats. I'll ask about and see what I can find out about whether the speed should depreciate that much from the cab. I do, however, suspect that it either doesn't run in a straight line or is slightly deteriorated over time.

Cheers,
Box is right at front of estate and it runs up the road to house. Both e and d side recently replaced.

Re: bt speedboost is it possible?

Hi podman,
Just been checking around some more and your speed is above the fault threshold rate and also falls within expected rates from the BT availability checker so we wouldn't be able to raise it as it will just get sent back to us as falling within expected limits.

Re: bt speedboost is it possible?

Cheers Jojo,
one can always dream. Wish he hadn't said anything though to think it's got the potential for another 5 mb until it gets to the cabinet 😞
guess i'll need to waith for fttc or fttp at somepoint, though checking the published webpages Scotland will get little cover in the near future.

Re: bt speedboost is it possible?

My speed of 0.9Mbps also falls within the 'accepted range' but to the end user is unacceptable.  Would you be able to use this fix to improve my speed?  I don't care that you class it as acceptable, you try using a speed that is so slow, it may as well be dial up.

Re: bt speedboost is it possible?

tony8436, I agree 0.9 Mbps is painfully slow (although about 20 times faster than a dial-up connection).  But "ye cannae change the laws of physics".  If you wanted to start your own thread and put some effort into debugging your broadband connection then I'm sure we could give you advice on how to make certain your line is achieving the fastest speed that it is capable of.  Apart from re-wiring, there is nothing a BT engineer could do that you could not do yourself unless you have a genuine fault, in which case it becomes Plusnet's responsibility to get fixed.
