broadband speed

my broadband speed seems to be all over the place at 1.20am it was 467. can't be many people on at that time, yet other speeds during the day have exceeded 700. can someone explain.
Also is this the best speed I can ever expect to get no matter what package I am on ?

Re: broadband speed

The package you are on does not determine your speed (unless you exceed the allowances) but your sync rate does. BT can also adjust your date rate dependent on your sync rate so if you have synced lower recently then it may take a few days for your original speeds to return.
Try doing a BT speedtest - www.speedtester.bt.com - and see what your IP profile is as that determines your data rate.

Re: broadband speed

I am having a problem with www.speedtester (BT) for some reason it will not accept my password (the one i use to access plusnet) or is it looking for some other password ?
Sorry to post such a simple query but I am new at this game.

Re: broadband speed

IIRC the BT speed tester doesn't ask you for a password, it asks you for your telephone number that the ADSL line is on, and the account username (e.g. username@plusdsl.net).

Re: broadband speed

Hi Gleneagles,
On October 6th, your rotuer resynchronised with the exchange on October 6th at 576Kbps.  your profile was subsequently dropped to 500Kbps by BT.  On the 8th (today) BT took your highest stable synchronisation speed of 864Kbps and subsequently applied a profile of 750Kbps.  I'll make some changes at this end to slightly improve your throughput, but you'll need to restart your modem or router for them to tke affect.

Re: broadband speed

Hi and sorry to interupt your enquiry Gleneagles, but this sounds the same problem as mine and I have raised a ticket and am waiting for a reply,I did test on several sites and these are the results.
BT test  Down 2912
              Up 448
Think bb.
  IP profile 2500
DSL connection rate up 448  Down  2912
  Actual IP in test  1369.
  On PN connections, 2500
since 17/09  my speed as been 1300 appox.
Is that the top speed I can expect and what is this about BT adjusting it after several days.
I would appeciate any of you guys opinions.

Re: broadband speed

Thanks for that.
I Managed to access the BT test results as follows,
IP Profile    750 kbps
upstream  448 kbps
Downstream  1088 kbps
Actual IP Throughput  686 kbps.
One other point, I switch off my modem each time I come off the computer. could this have any affect on my speeds ?
Thanks

Re: broadband speed

Hi Gleneagles,
It's possible that each time you restart your router, you may see a different synchronisation speed.  Your profile is calculated on those speeds.
I'd definitely recommend playing around with your filters and connecting into the master socket just to see if you notice an improvement to that speed.

Re: broadband speed

Hi Teds31,
Looking at the ticket you've raised, it looks like you haven't tried rebooting your equipment in a very long time.  Could you try doing this for me please?
I'm not sure why you would be seeing those lower speeds, but hopefully a reboot will help.

Re: broadband speed

Hi Ted,
For an IP Profile of 2500, you're getting results pretty similar to what I would expect you to.
I reckon all should now be well.
