Re: adsl 1 or adsl 2

I think it might be an idea to do some more automated continuous monitoring, if you want to have a go using a program called RouterStatsLite which many of us use from time to time.
If you download and install RouterStatsLite. I'd download the zipped version, and unzip it to a directory created in root ie in C:\   (not Program Files). Perhaps call the folder RSLite.
You can create another folder somewhere if you want to save the Captures and Log file in a different one (that would be/is my choice). May be call it RSLdata and put it in your Shared Documents folder.
Below is my suggested setup (for you) -
Do not click on the Start Arrow, bottom left, yet! But it ought to automatically open at the Setup tab the first time anyway. Maximise the RouterStats Window.
First go to the Setup tab, then the Router tab and select your modem/router - Thomson TG582n / TG587n
The URL tab should show the path where you get the stats.
On the Login tab, there should be a tick in the box 'Router requires you to login'
The Username will show the default one, which you may have changed (admin for the 582n).
The password may be a default one (unless changed by you) or the one provided with the router originally - note, this is not your broadband password - for the 582n it's the serial number beginning CP.......
On the Graph tab, initially, leave the Adjust axis automatically box for the Noise Margin, For the Connection Speed, untick the Adjust axis automatically & set the maximum to 5000, minimum to 0. Tick Noise Margin Vertical Axis 'Plot average value of previous 50 points', but not the Connection Speed average. Remember to click Apply on both boxes (and any other time  you make changes).
In the Sample Interval box choose 'Sample router every 10 seconds' and 'Points per page 720' and click Apply.
Next, go to the Capture tab. Define the folder where you want to save the Captured graphs, this could be the folder I suggested earlier 'RSLdata' or another of your choice, you can browse to it to make life easier. Tick 'Capture noise margin graph images', & 'Capture connection speed graph images', also tick 'Capture part-graphs when RouterStats-Lite closes'. (btw if you ever decide to use it, the Ping capture & setting is not saved on RSL close - note).
Go to the Log tab, type the filename you want for the log, e.g. RSLite.txt & then browse to the folder you want to save it in, suggest the same as the graphs, when selected, the full pathname will appear in the box. Comma separated values is selected by default, and log every 1 sample.
Nothing to change on the Appearance tab.
On the System tab, tick 'Minimise to system tray', 'Prompt before closing', 'Show noise margin on tray icon' & 'Show tooltip hints'. If you want the Ping plotter, tick that as well. On the PIng tab you need to specify the IP address to ping - try 212.159.13.49 - one of Plusnet's ntp servers.
You can now go to the Noise Margin tab and click on the green Start button. You should see a Green Camera icon on the LHS showing capture is active.
If you right click on the graph, the drop down menu shows a tick against Capture. Also tick the 'Plot Upstream Noise'.  You will also see some other options you can use at any time, similar on the other graphs.
There is a minor bug in the last few versions where the ping capture & settings are not retained on closure of RouterStatsLite (RSL).
If at any instant you want to Capture any graph that's not scheduled, do a right click Capture now
Maximise the RouterStats window before Minimising it to the Tray. This ensures captures are at the full screen size showing the most detail (as far as the SNRM is concerned).
You can create shortcuts to the exe file and to the folder for your captured files and put them on your desktop if you wish.
HTH.

Re: adsl 1 or adsl 2

Hi all,
We can see 9 drops that have been recorded this afternoon.
As you can see most of them seem to have happened in the past couple of hours:
<img src="http://community.plus.net/visualradius/generated/image14159898427659.png"/>
This hasn't had any negative impact on speeds yet but we will need to focus on this if it continues to be a problem for you.
I can see you've been online for almost 10 minutes at the moment so please try the speed tests Chris requested anyway if you can.
I'll check back on your account in around an hour to see if the situation has changed.

If this post resolved your issue please click the 'This fixed my problem' button

Re: adsl 1 or adsl 2

btw, the Internet light and the Ethernet and/or Wireless lights will flash when data is being sent/received (depending on which you are using).
Also if you can post the Stats again until you get RSL setup, it'll probably tell us if anything is happen to the sync.

Re: adsl 1 or adsl 2

Well bad news, you lost sync nearly 30 minutes ago and the speed has dropped BUT some of those error figures have been reset which only occurs on a reboot or power down.
Are you prone to power dips/outages at all? Might be worth checking the power plug is securely plugged in.
The sooner you can get RSL running, the better an overall picture it will give in conjunction with stats.

Re: adsl 1 or adsl 2

got to be honest im sick of it now 3 days of chewing on and no further forward.....we are not it experts and how the hell a company expects it,s customers to do this and that i do not know.....how would they expect some really elderly person to resolve stuff like this i,m 42 and spent more time trying to sort this crap out it,s got beyond a joke................
i really appreciate all the help but something has to give and we have made the decision to get rid and go back to mobile broadband...it was a lot less hassle and a damn site easier to resolve.........
so thank you chris and anotherone for all your help........but this is just to much to deal with after 3 days....looking at this screen is making me il...so time to leave altogether...

Re: adsl 1 or adsl 2

Well unfortunately line issues can take time to resolve and just left to the hands of BTw who are the suppliers it can take time. Anything a user can do that can usefully point a finger in the right direction helps speed up that process. And as a matter of fact we have & had quite a few "silver surfers" on here that have followed the guidance and help we have given and eventually got the issues resolved. Some of these intermittent problems don't have a quick resolution.
I'm not sure that we are "no further forward" as I pointed out, some stats got reset, which don't except on a reboot or power down. So if you definitely don't have any power issues this might be the modem/router &/or it's PSU on the blink.
As another regular poster on this forum often says, if you want problems like this resolved in a few hours or couple of days sort of thing, you need to use an ISP where you will pay a LOT more for your broadband (and it might have to be a business type of account) because they will then have the sort of Service Level Agreements with the providers that give almost 24hr cover.
As for mobile, well if you get a reliable enough signal and can get the speeds because they don't have congestion (not), then good luck, I personally wouldn't touch it with a barge pole for regular reliable use, and the costs always seem far higher.

Re: adsl 1 or adsl 2

i understand what your saying but i do not have the time to mess on all day...when i have other priorities to deal with and the last thing i need is spending all day, doing my job and then having to sort this out.....
in the job i used to do if something became useless and couldn,t be taken back to a seccured location then it had to be destroyed ie cut loose......
so unfortunatly the way i look at this is it is now useless....it,s not going to be resolved anytime soon so therefore cut it loose.......
i admit i,m know IT expert i spent 20 years of my life doing things most people can,t imagine or see in a movie......and stuff like this wasn,t needed so never came part of my life until i retired......
but like i said before i appreciate your help at least you took your time to do it.....

Re: adsl 1 or adsl 2

The whole point of using something like RouterStatsLite is that you can just get on and let it run, you don't have to spend all day messing around.

Re: adsl 1 or adsl 2

I've just taken a look back at this and your line has been stable, although slightly slower (2500) than we have seen previously. I know how frustrating this may be but if you'd like any potential issues to continue to be looked at just let us know.
