Wireless adapter change increase speeds???

I am currently on the last day of the initial line testing period after upgrading to Fibre extra from Fibre value and I'm connecting via a Netgear N150 wireless adapter. Current line speed is 68MB and my estimated line speed is 64MB. I appreciate with wireless I'm not going to get the full line speed that I'd get via ethernet. The netgear speed is upto 150 Mbps so my question is if I purchase a different adapter with speeds upto 300 Mbps will this make any difference to the speeds I'm getting. Below are the results of my speed tests since making the switch,  some of which are no better on the download speed than when I was on Fibre value.

Quick answer no 
Long answer,(I presume you are using the plusnet supplied router) there are one or two things to check
1) Check to see you are not on the same wireless channel as near neighbours, you do this by using a program like inSSIDer on your PC (or Wifi Analyzer on your android phone). Then change your wireless channel.
2) Is this a netbook or an older spec laptop/PC if it is ancient then the processor cannot handle the throughput of the wireless adapter.

Thanks. It is a decent spec PC and yes it is the supplied Technicolour router. As far as the channel goes I did check that out before and its currently on automatic but there isn't a free wi-fi channel that no one else is on so I guess with it being on auto it will look for the best signal anyway?

On the Plusnet supplied router I found my best channel manually by going through them all, one by one. I don't trust the Technicolor router to do anything well, that's why I've now invested £39.00 in a TP LInk WR1043ND. Much improved performance all round.

AFAIK it should do, however using <a href="http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/">inSSIDer</a> is my preferred method of doing that.

Most routers I've ever used with an 'Auto' channel selection just seem to select channel 1, they'd probably only try another channel if there was significant interference (BT's Homehub 3 may be one of the few exceptions).
Definitely best using inSSIDer and manually changing the channel.
Different wi-fi chipsets in the router and wi-fi adapter will perform differently (some combinations are not so well matched as others) but most will work reasonably well together.
I had a particular issue with an Intel ABGN laptop adapter working with my router but eventually I found a setting via device manager where 'enhanced throughput' was unticked (I never changed it since it was installed), when I ticked it my wi-fi throughput went from about 24Mb/s maximum up to nearly the same (around 55Mb/s) as I get with ethernet (figures from internet speedtests) so sometimes a rogue setting can be the problem.
As your speed is rather variable I think interference is the most probable cause and trying other channels may well help.

Ive tried manually changing to other channels but this hasnt made any difference to the speeds i am seeing. Are my current stats what i should expect connecting with wireless or should i still be seeing better speeds? I am at a loss now at what to do next and i cannot connect wired as the pc is upstairs and the phone line is downstairs. I thought the cordless phone may have been interfering with it but i switched this off and it made no difference.

You could use homeplug/powerline adapters to give a connection with wired type performance.  In simple terms you have one device plugged in to a mains socket near router and another upstairs where you need to work.  They use the mains ring main of the house to send a signal.

Yes an N300 adapter might be faster - considering the 150 or 300 speed is for 40MHz (using 2 channels), which isn't normally used on the 2.4GHz channels, because it would use almost all of the channels. So the actual max speed for an N150 adapter could be 65Mbit. And that 65 doesn't include the overheads of the wifi, the useful throughput is less.

Well thats confused me now as i have also been told a 300mbps adapter will make no difference. Anybody know the difinitive answer?
