Re: Why is my broadband speed suddenly so slow? (1/20th of normal speed)

Alright, I've pulled all those wires out, it's all still working, so good news there.
The orange wire was connected outside (as well as blue and white/blue).  There's actually two boxes outside my place but the one that I think is for the guy living above only had the green and the orange connected???  This is the only way I can tell them apart, but I figure that that one can't be mine.
It turns out that my other neighbour that I know, has had speeds a bit less than 2mb but faster than what I've been getting recently and just hadn't known any better, but he pulled out the orange wire outside (but couldn't be bothered changing the inside wiring) and reckons his got slower once he did that, is that what you'd expect?

I can see a slight increase in speed now so it looks to have helped. I suppose I need to wait a few days to know for sure.
Thanks again for your help, hopefully this is the problem sorted then.

Re: Why is my broadband speed suddenly so slow? (1/20th of normal speed)

You need to keep your modem/router on now 24/7 and see if the situation has stabilised.
If you run the BT Speedtester (Diagnostic) and post the results and see what you current profile is, you could also post the current stats.
Your neighbour need to do the Disconnect procedure I've told you about. He may have had a low sync event whilst messing with his wiring.
As for the one with green and orange wires connected, I think this tends to reinforce my earlier view that who ever connected each internal box didn't fully know what they were doing. I would expect the one with green and orange wires to have problems with very slow or frequently disconnecting broadband (if they have broadband). Just to point out that the wiring from BT's NTE (in this case an external one) to internal sockets is the responsibility of the property owner (possibly tenant).

Re: Why is my broadband speed suddenly so slow? (1/20th of normal speed)

Ok the bt speedtest is looking a bit better than before, i actually wanted to do it today before disconnecting the wires, but i was just getting errors so this is what it looks like after
download speed acheived during test - 0.46mbps
acceptable range is 0.05 - 0.5mbps
dsl connection rate: 3.23mbps (down-stream), 0.45mbps (up-stream)
IP profile - 0.5mbps

Uptime: 0 days, 0:55:41
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Channel mode: Interleave
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,028 / 3,584
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 3,232
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/MB]: 0.00 / 14.59
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 27.5 / 49.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 22.0 / 14.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / P
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 360 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 131,073 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 1,245,177 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 736
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

the loss of signal sticks out but it hasn't changed since I checked it 40 minutes ago, so don't know if it's relevant.

Re: Why is my broadband speed suddenly so slow? (1/20th of normal speed)

Edit: realised I hadn't included the Disconnect Procedure
@JimiES
Use this Disconnect method -
Do a Disconnect of your PPP Internet session with the ISP - you need to login to the modem/router interface and look for the Disconnect button to click on. On the Thomson modem/routers you will typically find it in the box marked Internet as shown here. Now wait a few minutes, power down. Then wait 10 minutes (during this time swap any filters, modem/router, connect to test socket, etc. - it doesn't matter if you take longer than 10 minutes) and then power up again (You may need to login to the modem/router and click on Connect to re-establish the PPP Internet session). Check the stats immediately (The Noise Margin [SNRM] shown is usually the current Target Noise Margin).
I usually recommend you do this no more than 5 times in an hour, and then leave it alone for the rest of the day.  Remember the reason for this procedure is to help prevent the exchange DLM from thinking you have a dropping connection.
You can user the Disconnect/Connect (without a power down) to Gateway hop.
@Jojo
Could you possibly do a Radius chart?
I'm not sure if sorting out his wiring from his external NTE has pushed his Target SNRM upto 15 (or 12) or if there is something else going on.

Re: Why is my broadband speed suddenly so slow? (1/20th of normal speed)

Sure thing (filling in as Jojo isn't in yet):
<img src="http://ccgi.psmith12.plus.com/visradius/generated/image13383710229311.png" />
Regarding the SNR, downstream is showing currently as being at 17 on BTs side so I suspect it's currently set to 18.

Re: Why is my broadband speed suddenly so slow? (1/20th of normal speed)

Thanks Matt, looks like still a few drops, but not as bad, we'll have to keep an eye on it for a while. Yes, I spotted Jojo was on a bit of a late shift  Smiley
Hi KaotiK,
It's impossible to say without more information. Could you possibly start your own thread so your problems don't get mixed up with this one, as we'll all get confused  Wink  Standard information needed is ADSL Line stats from your modem/router, Results of a BT speedtest (Diagnostic) and the Current Line speed from the member centre, and your exchange VP status, and which Gateway you are on.
If you aren't sure how to do all those, just start your own thread, do any that you can and one of us will give you links for the rest.
@JimiES
It's worth asking did you do a reboot around 2130 and again around 0130 last night by any chance?

Re: Why is my broadband speed suddenly so slow? (1/20th of normal speed)

HI KaotiK,
the reason is that your current SNR is 15dB which is keeping your sync rate down, and consequently the profile (which is 4000K at the moment) Can you tell me if you're using any extension cables/sockets? Do you have a test socket you can plug into?

Re: Why is my broadband speed suddenly so slow? (1/20th of normal speed)

I disconnected the router at about 1430 yesterday to test for noise with a phone (i didn't hear anything).  And since then I haven't done anything.  I know that I lost connection for whatever reason at around 1630, while I was using the internet and my IP profile went down to 0.35mb at this time, but the lost connection at 2130 and at 130 I don't know about.
I checked my router stats at about 6 this morning and it was showing about 13 hours uptime.  I'll try repost the stats again when I get back from work today, there seems to be an aweful lot of errors accruing, which was never happening before from what I can remember

Re: Why is my broadband speed suddenly so slow? (1/20th of normal speed)

It's looking like an ongoing fault. See what your stats are like. It could well be an intermittent connection, shame you're not hearing any noise on the phone line. Who was it you pay line rental to?

Re: Why is my broadband speed suddenly so slow? (1/20th of normal speed)

If you haven't tried another filter, you'd better do that (use the disconnect procedure). Have you got another modem/router you can try?or one you can borrow for 24 hours or so? If you do all that and the problem is still there, the next move would be raising a fault.
I'd be surprised if there wasn't audible noise on the line, perhaps only very bad intermittently. The bad connection causes a drop in sync and is still bad when the resync occurs, so you get a low sync event and a low profile which takes a while to recover on 20CN. You'll need to raise a broadband fault if you haven't heard the noise, but as you pay line rental to Plusnet that shouldn't matter, because when they do a Copper test they will hopefully see a fault and pursue it as a phone fault. So I'd think about raising a fault
As I haven't been on a faults journey for a very long time, it's probably changed anyway, you'll be asked if you are connected to the Test socket which you aren't as you don't have one.If there isn't an option there for that, when the fault ticket is raised, go and locate it in the member centre my questions and add to it that you have an external NTE and you are connected to the one and only internal socket and the bell wire is not connected.
