Re: What uses broadband allowance?

I suggest installing NetWorx on your computer from http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/. This will provide a real time measure of usage for comparison with the Plusnet figures.
Once installed go into settings and ensure that on the Main tab Multiplier is set to Kilo (1000), and tick "Ignore local traffic within the LAN". You might also prefer to set "On tray icon hover" to Daily traffic. On the Advanced tab click the squares so that all times from midnight to 8am are off-peak (green) and the rest on-peak (yellow). Also set Week starts to Monday and Month starts to your billing date.

My usage for the 7 days to 11th Oct was 1.53GB, then carried on very low until the following Tuesday when it suddenly spiked at 4.4 MB on that one day.  Since then it has been going down again but still incredibly high - 2.3GB; 1.65GB; and 1.26GB yesterday.

There's mixed units in that post - slip of the fingers? If not the 4.4 is abnormally low and suggests you hardly did anything that day.

Yes, sorry - 4.4.GB.

Re: What uses broadband allowance?

I don't know if I have tracked down what might be causing the trouble, or it's just something I don't understand.
After installing the Networx programme, in a little over 2 hours it's showing that I have used 957 MB already today. The most I've ever used in one day previous to last Tuesday's spike was 405MB, and generally around 200MB.
I went back over my History for the 15th - when the problems began, and have found many links to a Facebook address.  I haven't been on Facebook, I never go on any of the social media sites.
When I clicked on one of the links to see where it would take me (it has the word Crochetville in the address which is a legitimate forum that I do visit) I get a red warning saying "SECURITY WARNING: Please treat the URL above as you would your password and do not share it with anyone".
I'd appreciate any further thoughts anybody has.

Re: What uses broadband allowance?

Is this what the link looks like https://www.facebook.com/Crochetville
However there may be another problem with the forums as going to http://www.crochetville.com/community/ gives me this
A second try and it worked OK so it may have been fixed
If you would like to send one of the links to me via a PM I will have a look at it to see if anything obvious is there

Re: What uses broadband allowance?

Sadie,
The link you sent me is worrying as it relates to this http://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook/facebook-across-the-web/41735647130 and it would appear that someone has used your computer to connect to their Facebook account
Is there any possibility that someone in your house has had access to your computer
However as the usage from your computer has increased again it would appear that somebody or something has hacked into it
I suspect that you have picked up a trojan
Which antivirus are you using
I suggest downloading Malwarebytes and running it http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

Re: What uses broadband allowance?

Hi Oldjim - nobody else has access to my computer - just me in the house.
I have malwarebytes installed and ran a full scan yesterday.  Two threats were found which I quarantined.
Ccleaner and comodo antivirus didn't come up with anything.

Re: What uses broadband allowance?

I suggest having Malwarebytes check for updates and then run it again as obviously something has been missed which may well have recreated itself from a hidden file somewhere
If it finds the same threats then that is almost certainly the case and then I suggest following the procedure here https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showforum=7 subject "I am infected - What do I do now" and then posting on that board

I've updated malwarebytes and run a full scan again this afternoon, and nothing has been found - no malicious items detected.
In approximately 5 hours my use has climbed to 2.33GB.

Re: What uses broadband allowance?

I've now received an email that I've reached my limit (so the last 48 hours has cost me £5).  I think the PN support said that I'd still have access but very slow - he's not wrong there!
As malwarebytes didn't find anything, do you think it would still be appropriate to post my problem over there?

Re: What uses broadband allowance?

Try downloading this program (http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe) - run it and it will automatically open notepad with some information. Post the results here or save the *.txt file and attach it.
This program checks the status of your anti-virus/anti-malware programs and any running processes.

Re: What uses broadband allowance?

I'm at my wits end now - can't even run that programme - Comodo is stuck at "trying to execute find exe"  The OK button won't respond, and the text window is saying "access denied".  I think this is all beyond me to try sorting out remotely.  I'll wait until I've calmed down (getting stressed now and worried) and maybe try again later.

Re: What uses broadband allowance?

You might need to save the file (Right click on it Save As..) and then open it by right clicking and run as administrator
