What should my broadband speed be?

I tested my broadband speed at 20.00hrs this evening and it was only 748KB/sec.  I don't know what my syncronization speed is or how to find this out, but the broadband is much slower than I expected. What did I expect?  About double of what I got. I'd be interested to hear comments.
Thanks,
Alex

Re: What should my broadband speed be?

First find your router stats and post them here.
You will find instructions on how to get them here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php.
BTW you say your download speed is 748KB/sec and this equates to around 7.4Mb/sec. Did you mean 748Kb/sec?

Re: What should my broadband speed be?

Thanks for instant reply, Strat. Much appreciated.  You are right. I meant 748Kb/sec and that equates to 0.73Mb/sec.  I checked the router stats using the link you sent and my Downstream rate is 7616Kbps and Upstream 448Kbps, so it seems that I am actually getting less than one tenth of my Sincronization speed?!  If you need to see the rest of the stats. how do I copy them here?
Thanks,
Alex

Re: What should my broadband speed be?

What did you use to test your speed?  Was it the tool accessed from the Plusnet portal?  I ask because a profile speed of 7616Kbps might well give you an actual download at 5984Kbps -- or 748KBps. This seems like an odd coincidence. Are you sure that the tool you used didn't just misreport the units as bits when it meant bytes?
Sorry if this is just going over worn ground.

Re: What should my broadband speed be?

Run at BT speed test from here http://speedtester.bt.com/ and post back the results
Run a speedtest here http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk and use the link to post the image back here e.g.

in the PN portal what does it say under connection settings > high speed broadband
If you do these the confusion will be removed and it'll enable people to answer your question Smiley

Thank you Adiewoo and here are both tests from the links you sent.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 6500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5641 kbps
The router Rate is 7616kpbs
I downloaded a programme on BBCiPlayer last night and it took 17 minutes to download 644MBs.

Re: What should my broadband speed be?

Hi Alex,
Your speed test results aren't too far off your profile rate, which determines your throughput not your synch speed - see here for a fuller explanation https://portal.plus.net/support/broadband/products/faqs_and_guides/dslmax_guide.shtml#Sync
So your highest download would be 6.500 Mbps you are seeing 5.986 - nowhere near the 50% loss you thought you had.
There might be a couple of things you can do to squeeze a little more out of line but TBH it may not be worth the effort.

Re: What should my broadband speed be?

I must appologize to you and others. I have mistaked the advertised "up to 8Mb" to mean "up to 8MBps". I was certainly not getting 8MBps and neither is anyone else.<G>
Thanks,
Alex
