What's going on ?

Since moving to Plusnet about one month ago my download speed has been reasonably stable at about 40 meg on FTTC albeit much lower than the estimate of 57.1 meg.  I connect wirelessly but have found little difference between this and connecting directly to the Openreach modem by Ethernet cable, so I can assume that my wireless connection is relatively stable - incidentally I am using my own router and not the  Plusnet supplied one.  I have had two Openreach engineers out to investigate the difference between my  line speed and the estimated speed but both report that they think that all is in order and that the estimate is wrong.  However recently I have noticed that my download speed varies wildly at times between 40-20 meg and tonight it dropped to about 7 meg at the worst at about 11:30 pm so I would think that congestion is unlikely.  I have tried changing gateway with no real improvement.  What's going on ?

Hi there,
I've checked your connection and cannot see any fluctuation on your sync speeds. I'd suggest trying a wired connection when you see your speeds drop as something may be intermittently interfering with your wireless signal.
Aslo if you could run a speed test at http://speedtest.btwholesale.com and if you're seeing lower speeds then run the further diagnostics.

Re: What's going on ?

Well I got in from work about an hour ago and did a speedtest wirelessly which consistently came up about 20 meg mark.  I then connected with an ethernet cable to my router and messed about for a while trying to get the connection to work before I realised that I had the wrong DNS settings in my computer.  When I got the wired connection going I did a few speed tests and these all came back around the 40 meg mark, which is normal for my line.  I then went back to the wireless connection and repeated the exercise and all the speed tests came back more or less as per the wired connection, so I still don't know what's going on.
Last night just before things went really bad, my Wife said that she lost the internet to her laptop - was there perhaps an issue on the Plusnet side that caused my modem to re-sync?

Re: What's going on ?

There was a disconnection late last night;

It does sound like it's a wireless issue, it may be worth changing your wireless channel to see if that helps.
