WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Hello,

My connection seems to be dropping every 15 minutes.

Before a day or so ago it was fine.

Can you help please? I'm using an Asus DSL-N55U.

Thank you - AM

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Hi @almasson,

A warm welcome to the forums.  What self-help steps have you followed so far?  Please take a look at the speed issues thread - link below.

Broadband is not going to work well if the "phone" line is not working properly.

Please perform a quiet line test - dial 17070 select option 2 using a corded phone plugged into the test socket behind the face plate of the master socket. It should be silent. A noisy phone line (or no dial tone) will have a marked adverse impact on the performance of broadband.

If the line is noisy or there is no dial tone, then a PHONE LINE fault needs to be raised with your phone provider. If this is PlusNet, you can report a fault on line using the button below.

How is your line performing?

Please post your router stats; for PN TG582n and 2704n routers use the buttons below, for other routers look at the Kitz link.

Also run a BT Wholesale speed test (ideally using an Ethernet wired PC with the WiFi turned off) then run the further diagnostics and post the results here. DO NOT REBOOT the router!

Also find your CURRENT SPEED (PlusNet line profile) from the PlusNet user portal - you will need to log in.

I've done the quiet line test - all good.

The DSL stats are:

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're having connection problems

Whilst testing your line isn't flagging up a definitive cause of the problem, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is too low for the length of your line. The SNR helps the line to remain stable and unaffected by noise or interference on the line. The higher the setting for SNR, the higher the level of noise can be tolerated.

By increasing this I'd expect your connection to stabilise. If it doesn't help, please can you run through the broadband troubleshooter at http://faults.plus.net letting us know when you've completed it.

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Hi Anoush,

Thank you for getting back to me.

The SNR (down) is now 6.0. I'm guessing you've done something - correct?

My downlink is now over 9Mb/s on the speedtest, which is materially better than it has been.

Finally, my WAN link has not gone down since 16h39.

Regards,

Alastair

Yep, that was me. Happy to hear that did the trick. Thumbs_Up

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Hi again @Gandalf,

My SNR has dropped back to 3.8 (from 6.0) and has been at that or 3.9 for most of the day.

Whilst I haven't dropped my WAN connection since you modified [something], the speed has again dropped.

I cannot stream video from Amazon - this was never a problem before.

I will run the other tests you provided the link for and report back.

Regards,

Alastair

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

HI Alistair,

The SNR target is still set at 6db

Profile Info: WBC 160K - 24M Medium delay (INP 1) 6dB Downstream, UC Low delay (INP 0) 6dB Upstream (ADSL2+)

Current sync rate is 14482kbps

What sort of speeds do you get on a test?

Anoush

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Hello again Anoush,

Please excuse the delayed reply - I've been on holiday.

The line is no better, if anything it's worse. I'm getting frequent disconnects and the line won't sustain a reasonable stream - i.e. watching a Netflix is now frustrating as it frequently has to buffer.

However, on a speed-test, I get what appear to be half-reasonable speeds of 6.4 down (has traditionally been around 8.5) and 3.2 up (has traditionally been 1-2).

The DSL log shows a very low SNR Down:

Modulation : ADSL2+
Annex Mode : Annex A/L
Line State : up
Lan Tx : 20907488
Lan Rx : 12450894
ADSL Tx : 57917
ADSL Rx : 124641
CRC Down : 0
CRC Up : 0
FEC Down : 0
FEC Up : 48584
HEC Down : 0
HEC Up : 0
SNR Up : 6.6
SNR Down : 0.2
Line Attenuation Up : 13.5
Line Attenuation Down : 26.0
Data Rate Up : 1064
Data Rate Down : 16251

I have run all of the tests, except for using a different router, because I only have my current one (Asus N55U). It's always been a good router, so I'd be surprised if that's where the problem lies.

It may also be worth noting that I have an NTE5 faceplate splitter, so my DSL is straight into the 'mains'.

Any more ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Alastair

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Hi Alistair,

No problems, you have a good holiday?

Sorry to hear you're still having connection issues. Can you finish the broadband troubleshooter at http://faults.plus.net letting us know on here when you've completed it?

Cheers,

Anoush

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Hi there,

I've completed the troubleshooter.

My connection is less unstable than it was, however it's still below par as follows:

  1. Uplink speed very inconsistent - between 200Kbps and 2Mbps
  2. Streaming is problematic, in spite of a downlink speed of c. 8Mbps (that reported speed is nothing unusual in itself)
  3. The SNR down fluctuates from between 0.3 to 6 (current DLS log pasted in below)

Hope that helps.

Thank you.

Regards,

Alastair

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Thanks Alistair, apologies for the delayed response

From looking at your account the troubleshooter process was started at the back end of last month then was closed via the Member Centre mid last week. With that said your connection does seem to be a lot more stable now:

Is your router plugged into the test socket and have you tried a different router?

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Hi @almasson,

I'm back from holidays too...

The DS SNRM is very disconcerting - the Target being 6dB and there having been no disconnection for 8 days rather implies something is interfering with the signal.

Which router are you using?  Can you please check the link below for Router Stats and see if your router is compatible.

Can you please confirm that your router is not configured to "mess" with the target SNRM?

Re: WAN connection dropping every 15 minutes

Fix

Problem solved with my unstable ADLS2+ line, which was frequently losing sync due to very low downstream signal to noise ratio (SNR).

I now have a SNR down of 6 (was often less than 2) and up of 6.3.

The line is now stable and the speed is consistently around 11Mbps down and 0.6-0.8Mbps up. The downstream is around 10% slower than before, but that's a price I'm willing to pay for a steady and reliable sync.

Here's how I did it on my Asus DSL-N55U modem router (all settings under Administration > DSL Setting):

1. Changed the 'Country-Specific Setting' from 'United Kingdom' to 'Disabled'

2. Then changed the 'Stability Adjustment' to -1dB

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that things don't deteriorate again.
