Very slow speed, and getting worse!

My broadband is already rather slow, on an estimated 1.75mb service.
Usual download speeds are around 185kb / sec but I've had speeds around the 200 figure before without problems.
Now speeds are around 100kb /sec and getting worse.
BT speedtester gives me the following
122ms ping latency
0.32Mbps Download
0.38Mbps Upload
My Linksys WAG 320N router information is below
Fix this please, Its like being on a 56k modem again!

Re: Very slow speed, and getting worse!

Should I keep rebooting it?
Its connecting at 2688 Kbps, and until recently it used to connect at around 2100Kbps I think.
Is this higher connection speed causing the problems?

Not recommended.
What is your Current Line Speed?
You appear to have done the Beta BT speed tester - can you do the ADSL & Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) Diagnostics and report the results?

Re: Very slow speed, and getting worse!

Estimated line speed:
Not recorded (service activated before we introduced estimates).
Current line speed:
1.75 Mb
I cannot run the speedtester diagnostics, it asks me for my phone number, and then once I enter it, and run the test I get an Testr error message, unable to run the test!
Do I need to enter a service ID?
I just retried the test and got a java error, pasted below.

Re: Very slow speed, and getting worse!

@griffy
No, definitely don't reboot, leave it on 24/7
Have you got the latest Java Runtime on your machine. It should be jre6-u31. If so just try the Diagnostics one again. It is giving borked results for a lot of people at the moment. No, you don't need the Service ID, just the Phone number and it normally works OK.
@messiah13
If you can get the BT speedtester ADSL & FTTC Diagnostic test to run, can you post the results, the speedtest may give silly answers but it's the profile that's of interest. Also check https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed (login required) and see what the Current line Speed is? If you want a more accurate assessment of speed try http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics
What broadband package are you on? When you say tech support keep fobbing you off, what are they saying exactly?

Re: Very slow speed, and getting worse!

The package im on is a premier package from ages ago which gives me 13gb data between 4pm and midnight then un metered midnight till 4pm.
Every time i call up im on hold for 30mins then get told theres no-one who can do anything till "tomorrow" always "tomorrow"
my speed is around the 6Mb after midnight but as soon as 4pm hits its 0.20mb
Since that is the time my metered allowance starts then its clearly a problem with there speed capping thingy.
Iplayer test says - Your connection 204 kbps
BT test says ping 81.33 Down Mbps 5.71 Up Mbps 0.38
speedtest.net says http://www.speedtest.net/result/1909307408.png
since plusnet have my mobile number it really shouldnt be me chasing them to fix a problem with thier service that i am paying for. - but that wont be a problem as of next week as they will be losing me as a customer. And my friends. And family.

I have spoken to BT who guarantee over 7Mbs, which is what i was getting before I moved to plus net.

Re: Very slow speed, and getting worse!

@messiah13
Hi, I thought that may be the package you were on, but IIRC you have upto 20Gb until you get capped at 512Mbps, 17-20Gb at 1Mbps, 13-17Gb at 2Mbps for normal browsing etc. P2P/Usenet/FTP get clobbered at 256kbps at 13Gb & 128kbps at 17Gb.
So it would seem there is a major problem with your profile. Hopefully one of the digital care team will pick this up in the morning and resolve it for you and provide you with some suitable recompense for all the hassle.
Have you tried a Gateway hop, just in case you are on a dodgy Gateway?

Hi griffy,
Are you still suffering? I've just ran some checks and your profiles are not a problem. Are you running the tests wired or wirelessly?

Hi messiah13,
Think I've managed to locate the issue. Should be sorted in about 5 minutes.

Hi Jojo,
Its better but still not great.  I still cannot run the diagnostics on the bt speedtester site, I get an error telling me
"The Performance Tester is currently unable to run a speed test for your broadband connection. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider"
Download and browsing speed is still slow, the bt speedtest  gives slightly worse results than if I use a test on thinkbroadband!
I'm close to giving up!
Thanks for the reply,
Dave

I checked my Java version too.

Verified Java Version
Congratulations!
You have the recommended Java installed (1.7.0_03).

Re: Very slow speed, and getting worse!

Wired of course!  Smiley
My pc dosn't have wifi.
I could try wireless on the iMac, just to see if there is much difference.
