Very slow speed after initial 15 days. DLM Reset?

Hi,

Just recently I signed for the plusnet broadband service, it was activated on April 23. I started getting a good service and speed during the first few days. However after the 15 first days my speed has been decreasing constantly day by day (from ~3mb/s to ~2mb/s to now ~1mb/s. My guess is that the line is getting a reduced speed by DLM. Part of this might have been my initial setup. The first 3-4 days I had the provided Plusnet Hub Zero connected to a phone line extension (i.e. not master socket), and noticed frequent drops when I had a big upload. I figured I could replace the router with something with better QoS/SQM so I got from eBay a BT Home Hub 5 (BTHH5) with OpenWRT. Upon looking at the logs of the BTHH5 I saw there were frequent DSL drops at night (between 2am and 8am), sometimes averaging a drop per hour (sample router log with lots of drops through the night attached). Router configuration:

Yesterday I tried some things on the BTHH5 by recommendation from the people at the OpenWRT forums. Here are the stats after powering off the router for 15 minutes and having then the router running for 2hrs running from an extension socket.

Because of the high FECS I plugged the BTHH5 router to the test socket and repeated the above. That gave me way lower FECS and a bit lower HEC.

I thought that this would get the router not dropping the DSL connection, however upon checking the log this morning I had 1 DSL drop at about 4am (sorry I dont have a log available because I didn't saved it before powering off the router and swapping it for the Plusnet Hub Zero). 

 

I don't know if this might be a problem with the BTHH5 router/modem or line. My guess is that the best course of action (obviously, unless something else is suggested here) would be to run the Plusnet Hub Zero directly from the test socket with a DLM reset and see if there are any further drops. Hi there, I've just had a look into this and tests don't show an obvious fault or cause for the issue but there is evidently a problem as the connection is dropping pretty frequently:

 

 

The best thing to do next would be to follow the steps here: https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/connection-troubleshooting/ then report a fault at http://faults.plus.net

 

Let me know here when you have and I'll get that raised with our suppliers for you.

I have already followed the steps and reported the fault.

Just to add up, since the time of my first post I had two drops in connection (one just when I was about to post this) with the Plusnet Hub Zero connected to the test socket.

I replied to the fault ticket with the following,

Just two questions before proceeding as I am a bit concerned by the £65 possible charge. As I stated in the community forum post, I have been using a BT Home Hub 5a modem/router with OpenWRT firmware installed which might have been the reason for the dropping in connection. However I have, since this morning, swapped the router for the provided Plusnet Hub Zero and connected it to the test socket. Since then, and since my post in the forum, two drops occurred. 

My first question is: This last two drops that occurred with the Plusnet Hub Zero, could they have been related to you pulling data or looking at my connection? 

If that was the case, and to rule out that there might be something wrong with my equipment/internal wiring, could we instead do a DLM reset or at least manually putting me on a higher profile, and continue monitoring the connection? And just then, if more drops occur, have an engineer visit arranged.

With regards to the points you've raised

The majority of the tests we do are intrusive so they will cause your connection to drop. I've checked your line and I can see we've done two intrusive tests on your line today before the one I've just done which will also have caused a drop.

I'm more than happy to put through a DLM reset through for you but if the line is dropping whilst the speeds are currently banded then it's likely DLM will reapply the banding and we'll be back to square one again.

If you still want me to reset the line then respond to this post and I'll get that arranged for you

Thanks for your quick reply. I understand this, I think I would prefer a DLM reset rather than having the engineer come and all ending up on me using a faulty router/internal wiring through the initial days. So please go ahead with the DLM reset. If the line continues to drop with the Hub Zero router I'll be happy to have an engineer over.

Hi @Lectos 

A warm welcome to the forum - thank you for the excellent set of diagnostics and descriptions of what you have done.  Plugging into the master socket test port eliminates your internal wiring (assuming the NTE has been wired correctly) so that ought to minimise the risk of the £65 NFF of fault found in end user equipment charge.

Setting aside the fact that your internal wiring is doing you no favours, the DS SNRM is very high - the cause of this needs to be identified.  If there is not line fault, you might be looking at a REIN issue which will take a lot of effort to profile.  Detailed monitoring of the router stats can be a helpful aid in understanding what is happening.  The HH5 does lend itself to such monitoring using Routerstats - see http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

@Townman Thanks a lot for the welcome. I am a bit reluctant to use the BTHH5 at the moment, would just like to rule out that it is the cause of the problems. However, if after the DLM reset this continues, and if the engineer doesn't find anything, I will look into this. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi @Lectos

 

The DLM reset doesn't have a timescale - it will reset it indefinitely until something on the line causes it to move - for example drops, noise etc.

 

You shouldn't expect drops because of DLM, but any drops that do occur may result in the DLM affecting your speed as Matt has covered in his earlier post.

Unfortunately after a couple of months of having no additional problems, I've had another DLM profile decrease. I sincerelly don't know what happened. I was out of the flat for about 12 days and nobody else was here (so nobody using the internet or  electric devices). Upon returning I noticed the internet was a bit slow, so went to check the modem statistics (Plusnet hub zero). Line was up for about 10.5 days but ES errors where high:

As an additional note, there is a construction going on just infront of the flat, as well as some gas line works down the road. Don't know if this is relevant or could have some impact due to REIN issue caused by the construction/roadwork.

I'm sorry that you're experiencing problems with your connection again and for any inconvenience that this is causing you.

 

I've tested your line and can see that it's currently syncing at 6.4mbps, which is below the line's estimates of 16 - 19.5mbps. The SNR margin is high but so are the number of errors on the line, so an DLM reset wouldn't resolve the problem and is likely to result in the connection becoming intermittent.

The test hasn't picked up the cause of the problem from here, but it could well be that the construction work near your property has led to REIN. We'll need to investigate this further for you. Thanks for your reply and help. I will go through the troubleshooter later today, need to get some work done before. Will report back once that is done.

A quick question, did you perform a DLM reset just now? After your test the line resynched at 17474 Kbps with a SNRM of 3.2 downstream. Also out of curiosity, why is it synching at ~3 dB SNRM instead of the usual 6 dB?

Hi @Lectos 

 

I don't think Emily actually performed any DLM reset...but it's good to know that the line is now that the line is no syncing within estimates! 

Also out of curiosity, why is it synching at ~3 dB SNRM instead of the usual 6 dB?

Hard to say really, this can happen for a number of different reasons and trying to find this out after the fact is pretty much impossible.
