VPN traffic managed?

Hi I am on 75mbps fibre, every thing is perfect with out using a vpn service, constant 70 to 75 Mbps.

but as soon as I connect using a vpn service my speed drops by 50% i.e. Around 35 to 40 Mbps.

i have tried various vpn servers that are using low load i.e. About 25% these are from various servers around the world even in uk. I have even tried a different vpn provider, same problems. Bt has checked my line every thing is perfect. So does plusnet throttle vpn? Even though I have read it does not.

ps this is not BitTorrent traffic but normal surfing like emails, google etc

can some one confirm if this is true? Thanks

Re: VPN traffic managed?

Fix
Whilst I can't offer an explanation for what you're seeing, I can tell you that we don't throttle VPN traffic.

Re: VPN traffic managed?

Hi rumtop,

How have you implemented the VPN?

Do you have VPN client software and what device is it running on?

Could the 40 mbps limit be due to the client software or device?

Has the VPN implentation been proven to exceed 40 mbps on a different ISP?

Richard

Re: VPN traffic managed?

Hi Richard,

Yes I run my vpn service from its own client software, not from an addon to a browser or any thing like that.

I have also contacted my vpn service provider to confirm there are no issues with their service like lag etc, that's why I tested on servers with only about 25% load.

I use a iPad, and I have even reset the iPad to make sure there was no glitches with it. And as I have said it  runs perfectly with no vpn connected.

Its very strange and unable to find a cause.

unable to try with a different isp.

Re: VPN traffic managed?

are you sure it's not a limitation of the VPN client software?

Re: VPN traffic managed?

@rumtop

I think chenks76 is right. My VPN software always drops the max available speed by about 50%, depending on which remote server you use.

Re: VPN traffic managed?

Hi Chenks76,

yes as already mentioned I contacted my vpn service provider to confirm that there was no limitation. Like all vpn services there will be some reduction in speed due to distance or load on their servers.

As already stated I tried different servers at different times of the day even a different vpn provider.

Re: VPN traffic managed?

I agree with you nonzero, but I get no change by changing servers so that does not seem to be the problem.

VPN encryption can slow the speed down, so even tried different encryption methods.

I am going to run some ping tests / trace route to various servers over the world to see if this throws any thing up.

( but as it's vpn network it will be limited)

Re: VPN traffic managed?

yes but did you try a different VPN client?
by client we mean a client app you have installed on your ipad.

Re: VPN traffic managed?

Hi chenks76,

as previously mentioned ,I have tried a different vpn provider, and yes it has a completely different client app on my IPad.

Thank you every one for all the ideas and surgestions, this is more a nuesence than critical as I do enjoy over 70mbps with no vpn.

Re: VPN traffic managed?

that doesn't prove anything though.
the source of the drop in speed could be anywhere.
it may even be the ipad!

you need to test on another device - preferrably laptop or PC connected via ethernet.
