Usenet Speed

Since the other thread disappeared, I thought I would start my own. I'm going to log my download rates on usenet every day, unless I've used the PC for something else that would skew the results.
Here is today's figures from midnight to midday.
[tt]Start of hour Data Rate, kBps %Max
14/08/2009 00:00 932,133  KB 259 31
14/08/2009 01:00 2,944,515  KB 818 97
14/08/2009 02:00 2,981,817  KB 828 98
14/08/2009 03:00 3,034,992  KB 843 100
14/08/2009 04:00 2,984,403  KB 829 98
14/08/2009 05:00 2,984,463  KB 829 98
14/08/2009 06:00 2,983,514  KB 829 98
14/08/2009 07:00 2,957,469  KB 822 97
14/08/2009 08:00 2,967,635  KB 824 98
14/08/2009 09:00 2,167,851  KB 602 71
14/08/2009 10:00 664,920  KB 185 22
14/08/2009 11:00 489,602  KB 136 16[/tt]
After midday it's more difficult to do a table as the data rate is low enough that other uses of the PC (like RDPing to it to get the table) would skew the results a lot and make it look a lot better than it is. I don't have something that will just log usenet traffic.
At the moment, I should be getting 64kBps of throttled data - I'm averaging about 5kBps. Utterly Useless.
More will follow...

Re: Usenet Speed

Are you expecting 64kBps or 64kbps?
You are signed up to receive a maximum of 64kbps - or about 6KBytes/sec - in the daytime anyway Cheesy

Re: Usenet Speed

Well I've only just got home so can't comment on speeds this morning, but I'm now getting full line speed (220kB/s) on gateway thn-ag3 with BBYW2 account.
Paul
Edit: spoke too soon, speed is all over the place, one moment full speed, next almost down to zero then off up again

Re: Usenet Speed

I'm expecting 64 kilobytes per second (kBps, not kbps... 64kBps = 512kbps). That's what I should get, and occasionally do, when the first throttle level of 512kbps kicks in after midday.
I am most certainly not signed up to receive a maximum of 64kbps at any time - the lowest throttle limit is 128kbps (16kBps) which is sometimes reached. 6kBps is way below the minimum I should ever get, yet is unfortunately above what I often see.
At this moment, I'm averaging about what I should at this time of day. I'm getting about 19kB (kilobytes!) ps out of a maximum of 164kbps=20.5kBps. That's good. I hope it lasts but it probably won't based on past observations.

Re: Usenet Speed

I've just arranged with Matt (Orbery) to change my account from BBYW2 to BBYW pro so it will be interesting to see what sort of speeds I get. The change won't come into effect untill 22nd.
At the moment I'm getting my expected throttled speed about 30kB/s

Re: Usenet Speed

Good luck with the move.
Well, it's just gone 10pm and I should be throttled to 256kbps=32kBps.
I'm averaging 0.3kBps (that's zero point 3) and that is useless as not a single part gets to come in before it times out.
Pathetic!
This is what it's like more often than not.
Effectively usenet is not available now, despite it being a core internet service.

Is that your renewal date Paul mine renews on the 20th of the month so I'm wondering whether to do it now or not, I did get a usable connection this afternoon on BBYW3 so throttling doesn't come into effect till 4pm mind you I did have to swap gateways twice, also I beleive you have to stay on the one you swap to for a month is that correct?

Re: Usenet Speed

Yeah 22nd is the renewal date. I think you are right you have to stay at least a month once you move.

Re: Usenet Speed

Here's Monday morning's - not good:
Hour Start           Data         Rate, kBps %Max
17/08/2009 00:00 586,459  KB   163       19
17/08/2009 01:00 2,828,872  KB 786       93
17/08/2009 02:00 2,981,948  KB 828       98
17/08/2009 03:00 2,984,704  KB 829       98
17/08/2009 04:00 2,985,425  KB 829       98
17/08/2009 05:00 2,981,724  KB 828       98
17/08/2009 06:00 2,982,952  KB 829       98
17/08/2009 07:00 2,961,150  KB 823       98
17/08/2009 08:00 2,812,244  KB 781       93
17/08/2009 09:00 2,337,331  KB 649       77
17/08/2009 10:00 853,270  KB 237       28
17/08/2009 11:00 1,064,085  KB 296       35
As you can see, the first and last three of 'unthrottled' time are very low.
I'm not getting anywhere near the 64kBps throttle after midday - very erratic and averaging about 10 - 20kBps at the moment.

Re: Usenet Speed

I think that's because you have two issues:-
The throttling issue and
The Contention issue where virtually everything is given priority over usenet.

Re: Usenet Speed

I don't have a problem with the throttling issue, other than frequently not reaching the throttled limit. The limits are high enough that binary usenet would be perfectly usable during the day if I could actually reach those limits.
The problem during the day is that I often can't reach even those limits. The rate ends up low enough, especially in the evening when I, like many others, get home from work, that usenet is practically unusable. I can't even refresh the headers list because everything times out.
Usenet is a core internet service and having it effectively denied is simply unacceptable no matter who the provider or what service plan I am on.
Overnight I frequently don't get a good rate even when not throttled, as shown in my table above. Four of the twelve hours had a low rate.
Somewhere in PN's network, there is a problem either of bandwidth or of processing power. In either case, they don't have enough to support their users.
If it's caused by prioritising traffic, and during the day it might well be, then PN really need to look at their priorities because they are causing the usenet service to be unusable for a big part of the day. Usenet users are just as important as those who want to watch streaming television (why not just buy a TV???) or play Quake.
Overnight though, it's most likely a pure bandwidth/processing problem.
Edit: Just thought I would add that currently (12:52pm) I'm averaging 0.4kBps on usenet. I've just stopped it because I will just end up with file corruption. So once again usenet is unusable.

Re: Usenet Speed

I can get up to about 60KBytes/sec in the most throttled time of day - on the so-called "legacy" BBYW3
[edit]I've got a slow 21CN connection - the gateway for this is currently under-loaded.

Re: Usenet Speed

Dont know what plan you are on but judging by the large amount it must be unlimited.
and the rotten apple core speeds on this chart are what you are getting

I'm still on the limited plan - BBYW3
