Updated Router, drops

Hi, I just replaced my ASDL router gateway with a new Linksys X3500.  I previously had drops every few days but it was more or less tolerable.  Now the network is dropping 3-4 times a day.
I know with a new ADSL connection it take time to stablise, is this also true with a new router or do I have a line fault?

Re: Updated Router, drops

The line only needs time to stablise on a new connection not when you change router.
Have you tried changing the microfilter and plugging your router into your test socket
(http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/master-socket-guide.shtml)
Also what is your router stats ?

Re: Updated Router, drops

Kirk, thanks for the lightening fast post.
Yep everything is working correctly from the tests I have done,  line noise etc.
I cannot get any stats out of the router unfortunatly.  I tried the various suggestions for Linksys models but could not get at the stats.  My first thought was to see the SNR but no luck.

Re: Updated Router, drops

Well I'm sorry you have an issue with your broadband  Sad
Have you plugged it into the test socket ?
If so either wait till a member of staff to look at the post in the morning or complete the broadband troubleshooter at http://faults.plus.net/

Re: Updated Router, drops

Hi ByteFight,
Looks like it's dropping fairly often:

I'd definitely recommend running through the faults wizard at http://faults.plus.net - once you've answered all the questions there it'll raise a ticket through to our faults team who will get this sorted for you.

Re: Updated Router, drops

There is a possibility it is a stabilisation period, based on my experience of router changes. I have recently changed from a broadcom based modem/router to a trend based unit and for the first 5 hours there were frequent disconnections, though little variation in sync/srnm these became much less frequent and after about 32 hours  a resync 400kbps lower (3.6Mbps) and srnm 3dB higher (3.6dB) - it has been stable since then. I have only noticed this effect with a change of chipset, though Roll_eyes
Plusnet FTTC (Sep 2014), Essentials (Feb 2013); ADSL (Apr 2009); Customer since Jan 2004 (on 28kb dial-up)
Using a TP-Link Archer VR600 modem-router.

Re: Updated Router, drops

ByteFight - please let us know how you get on. I take it the router is just dropping but re-connecting automatically?
Out of interest, what timeframe is considered 'normal' for a router to drop out? Ideally never, but daily? weekly? monthly? every 2 months?
Edit: Interesting quote from Adam (Plusnet) here implying that a few drops a day are normal/nothing to worry about.

Re: Updated Router, drops

Ideally none Smiley but one or two drops a day wouldn't be a worry - as far as drops go I believe (at least this was the case on ADSL2/ADSL2+) that it's three in an hour that will cause the line profile to be reduced though the DLM system at the exchange that handles this also takes the errors on the line into account as well.
The number of drops shown in the graph above though would definitely indicate a fault, unless they're all disconnections that happened due to the router being turned off.

Matt
Thanks for the radius info.  Not a pretty picture.  I have logged a ticket that will hopefully remedy this.
Cheers.

Re: Updated Router, drops

I recieved an email telling me Plusnet are turning on Interleaving to fix my issue but that this will impact my latency. I do a lot of gaming and this sounds like it could be a potential problem.  Any experiance out there?
As my line worked fine until recently I'm not convinced this is the fix I want. Why do I need interleaving now when I didn't need it before?

Re: Updated Router, drops

Hi ByteFight,
It seems interleaving has been turned on after automated testing, this can be turned back off if needed.
Your fault ticket is still with our faults team and we'll update you as soon as we've got an update.

Re: Updated Router, drops

Hi Byteflight.
Did you manage to resolve this on the end? I've been having similar problems with my x3500.
My ancient BT Voyager still works fine.
I flashed the firmware with build 18 yesterday as I'd read that it had improved things for some users.
I'd love to know if you got it going ok, and how you did it.
