Unable to access most web sites with new Linksys E4200 Router

I've been on FTTC since March and had no problems with the service.  My router,  however, an Apple Time Capsule, was not so reliable and needed a reboot every few days,
So after reading various reviews, I chose the Cisco Linksys E4200 V2 - a top of the range router with lots of useful functions.
The Setup completes OK and PPPoE logs into Plusnet fine.  But then I hit the problem.
Most of the websites I use simply won't load .
In Safari on my OS X Lion, Macbook, I get an error like this "Request Timeout. The server timed out while waiting for the browser's request. Reference #2.525fdd58.1336048435.0"
In IE on my Windows XP laptop, the error is "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"
But some websites still load fine.  So bbc.co.uk, loads instantly.
Most other sites I try, including www.plus.net and www.apple.com - won't load at all.
If I connect to my work VPN, I can browse as normal.
I have both wired and wireless computers, it makes no difference to the problem.
I did some searches on the internet for help, and the only suggestion was the MTU settings so I tried those suggestions, but still no joy.
I even suspected a faulty router so sent it back and got a replacement,
I am pulling by hair out on this one, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reading some other problems with Netgears with FTTC can you try putting in fixed DNS servers into the router

With further testing, there appears to be 4 different symptoms depending on the site.

  • Works Fine

  • Very slow to load but get's there in the end (after about 30 seconds)

  • Very slow and incomplete

  • Doesn't load at all.

here are the results from a few sites:
www.b3ta.com - slow
www.neowin.net - slow and external content missing
www.the register.co.uk - slow
slashdot.org - does not load
www.engadget.com - does not load
www.14u.com - slow
www.gizmodo.co.uk - slow and missing content (like ccs)
www.switched.com - does not load

Re: Unable to access most web sites with new Netgear E4200 Router

Hi leahk,
Thanks for that. Those sites work fine for me and some of them are very popular so I'd expect lots of complaints if it was a routing issue. Have you a different brand of router you can try? Are any other forum members looking at this thread having any trouble with these sites?

Re: Unable to access most web sites with new Netgear E4200 Router

I know the cause is the router - if I swap my old one back it works fine. - This appears to be a problem that affects this model of router (as this is the  second one I have tried).  But I have read reviews from other who are using it with FTTC with no problem so it appears to down to something in my connection that don't like the router.

Hi LeahK
If you get us a Wireshark capture while these requests are failing, we might be able to work out what's going wrong.

Re: Unable to access most web sites with new Netgear E4200 Router

I think there may be an error in the title of this thread.  The E4200 is not a netgear router, I think it is Linksys

Thanks - I've got a capture from Wireshark - where do I upload it to? (It's not one of the permitted attachments in the forum)

Hi leahk,
You'll need to zip it up and attach it to a ticket. It can't be more than 4MB in size though. Let me know when you've done it and I'll get it looked at.

Thanks again Jojo.
I've raised ticket 55117615 and uploaded the Wireshark capture to it.

Re: Unable to access most web sites with new Linksys E4200 Router

This is an odd issue, it could be down to do with DNS being confused, from your trace route it show 192.168.1.1 being the DNS host for your device. Have you tried using a another DNS IP address rather than relying on your router? What I mean by this is to set DNS IP in the NIC properties
Try using 212.159.13.49 and 212.159.13.50
Just noticed oldjim has already suggested a DNS issue, did you try what he suggested?
Dan.

Re: Unable to access most web sites with new Linksys E4200 Router

Hi Kevin,
I'm not 100% sure what is going on here. I can see TCP sessions being set up correctly, but data within these sessions isn't being received by the remote host and your computer is repeatedly trying to resend it.
Could you please try configuring your routers firewall state to disabled (only temporarily) to see if this fixes it?
If this doesn't work, then please could you try to capture a longer file? We can only see one complete TCP session in you capture, a few other would be good, some that work and some that don't within the same file would be useful.
Thanks,
Matt
