Hi.
How do I turn off the wireless part of the router on a Thomson TG585?
I use a cable for my desktop. The wireless is only used on rare occassions when I have visitors but I want to prevent any possible access by anyone else when it is idle.
I press the wireless button on the front face of the router and the wireless and ethernet lights go off for half a second then come on again.
If I go to the control panel, network connections, it only shows the LAN, not the wireless.
The leaflet that I got with the router doesn't mention how to turn off the wireless.
Any ideas?

On the v7, you fire up a web browser and connect to the router's control panel.
Then select home network.
Then interfaces.
Then wlan.
Then configure.
Then unselect the 'enabled' checkbox.
On my plusnet-branded router, the following URL works to get to that page:
http://10.0.0.138/cgi/b/_wli_/cfg/?be=0&l0=4&l1=1&name=WLAN:%20PlusnetWireless
Yours may well be on a different IP address or have the wlan named differently.

Thanks for the reply gyre.
Can't imagine why I have to use a web browser to turn my wireless on and off? Surely a button on the router or a direct connection from my PC to the router to give it the command would be sufficient. Anyway I will give it a go.
Thanks again.
Sidewinder.

It's also possible to telnet to the router and issue the commands:-
:wireless ifconfig state=disabled
:saveall

Buttons and switches cost money. And can go wrong.
For most people turning wireless on or off is a very rare event, usually only done as part of the initial configuration.
If I was designing a router I'd only provide buttons for regularly-used functions.
Many routers have none at all; some have one to temporarlily enable wireless association.
My usual router has no buttons or switches at all (not even an on/off) apart from a recessed "reset" switch.
