Technicolor TG582n FTTC Local DNS Service

I'm looking for some assistance in sorting out an issue arising from some overly hasty dns reconfiguration.
In changing the router settings to use open-dns servers, I followed some instructions which cleared the whole dns server host list. Unfortunately one of the existing entries in the list was a route for the local DNS server running on the router and from that point, I lost the ability to resolve local devices to their ip address on my local 192.168.1.0/24 subnet. 
Running "dns server host list" on the router console shows that the router still has local ip entries for devices. Nslookup simply shows dns server 192.168.1.254 as not responding.
I've tried a couple of options for a dns server route  to this on the router, but so far, no luck.
Does anyone know what the correct dns server route entry for the local dns should be?
Or is there anything else I'm missing?

This must be the default since I didn't add it, but on my TG582n (ADSL) I get
{admin}=>dns server host list
Address          Hostname                     TTL (s)                          Creator
<local>          dsldevice                       1200                        undefined
and nslookup gives
C:\>nslookup dsldevice 192.168.1.254
Server:  dsldevice.lan
Address:  192.168.1.254
Name:    dsldevice.lan
Address:  192.168.1.254

It might be helpful if you tell us WHAT you changed.

It may depend on which method you've used to configure the dns setting.
Looking at the two methods here:
http://npr.me.uk/changedns.html
Method 1) will allow the lookup of local hosts.
Whereas method 2) will not do local hosts lookup.
