Just a thought for your original problem - have you tried changing the CMOS (motherboard) battery?  A dead (or dying) battery will cause the problems you're seeing.
Worth trying for the couple of quid they cost!

I always follow the recommendation of the A List at PC Pro Magazine  www.pcpro.co.uk
Their mobo and cards products have worked well, very well, for me in the past.
