TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

Hi Everyone,
Im having a bit strange issue that I hope someone might help with.
To cut a long story short I was running the 582n on the latest firmware and get a speedtest result of anything between 17 to 19 mbps.
I was thought I might improve things by buying a TP link WD 8980 adsl router modem ..... speeds drop to 10 to 12 mbps
Ive also got a BT Homehub 5 modem router .... speeds still at 10 to 12 mbps.
All the above are using the same cables and are located in the same position.
Why is the £6 582n out performing £70> equipment please? Is there some hidden settings on the 582n?
Thanks in advance
Phil.

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

It would be helpful if you could post the ADSL line statistics reported by each router. (eg. line speed, attenuation, noise margin etc)
There is probably a logical explanation.

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

Sorry its taken a while to come back with the info. Just for clarification I have a Technicolor 582n and a TP link wd8980. The techni returns a connection test result on average of 18mbps using the standard windows 8 network testing app. The Tplink returns on average of 12mbps. Uploads speeds are around 300k on both routers.
I am on ethernet when running the test … so for clarification I am not testing the speed of my wifi network here guys …. I want feeback for testng the adsl line please.
I have used the same rj11 cable and filter for both routers and testing. I have also swapped rj11 cables and filters and run more tests. The results were as close as not to even bother mentioning.
I have also changed the DSL modulation type on the tplink from auto to adsl2+, auto etc with no speed test result improvement.
So again my question is … how can a free technicolour 582n be beating an £80 TPlink router? Do the techni routers have some hidden settings that I’m missing? Can anyone make a suggestion that I need to change some sort of setting somewhere please? I’d really like to use my tplink as it has dual band and better management and wifi house coverage but I cant take the line speed decrease. It’s doing my head in. Have no idea why the line attenuation and snr values are differant when all that has changed in testing are the routers.

Help please?

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

There is no difference in the connection speeds
Have you compared the MTU of each

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

Thanks, I'll check the mtu
Where do I find the MTU setting on the Techni 582n please?
Thanks for your reply.

it isn't easy http://npr.me.uk/telnet.html and it is probably 1500 so what are the ones on the TP-Link

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

I did some googling and it seems the 582n is likely to be set at 1500. The max the wd8980 will accept is an integer of 1492. Ive just set it, rebooted, ran a test and got pretty much the same results  Cry
I'll check the link you fired up and check.
It's driving me mad that I bought a better router than the 582 and it gives me a worst connection  Crazy
Should I request one of those line resets? When I started the dsl contract back in October we had builders in and the power to the router was up and down ... more often down. But I'm guessing that wont have any effect on my wd8980.
Just out of interest, do my snr and attenuation stack up ok? Is generally my line speeds ok? I can see the exchange from my house, its about 200mtrs away FYI
Thanks for the input ... especially on a Saturday night

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

Your speeds are pretty much correct and you have a default noise margin of 3dB which is the lowest they do
You should ask for your upstream to be uncapped though

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

Is there a "bandwidth control" or "QOS" setting in the TP Link which needs adjusting?

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

Thanks Oldjim. Appreciated re line speeds. I just need this wd8980 to pick its game up. It's got me stumped. It got great reviews and so far this free but pay 5.99 postage router is creaming the wd8980 Crazy
Re the qos and bandwidth control: Nope. Non was implemented from day one and the router has been hard reset so many time I've lost count. Generally I'll change a setting or number there of ... then after a good few swapping back and forth I'll reset to factory.

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

fwiw, looking at the W8980 v1 user manual, it seems to suggest the default MTU is 1500.
Can I suggest you check the broadband ATM settingss on the W8989 ?
PPPoA uses encapsulation type VCmux, with MTU of 1500.
PPPoE should also work but requires encapsulation type LLC, with MTU of 1492.

Do you witness the same poor speed test results with the TPlink when using the BT wholesale performance tester?

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

Ive checked the atm settings on the wd8980 and they are what you stated, but thanks for the pointer.
I'm running the BTwholesale tests now adhering to the instructions for the test on the web page.. Will post shortly. My speed seems to have now dropped to 6mb on the techni 582n as we speak. I'll post both sets of results in 10 mins or so.
Thx

Re: TP-link w8980 v BT homehub 5 v Technicolour 582n

Well the speed tests are in but am I correct in thinking that my line speed has dramatically dropped? 6mb??? Shouldnt I be getting way above that? Surprisingly thought the tplink seems to be able to match the techni at these lower speeds. Really confusing.
