Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

Hi
Just out of interested I logged into the member centre to keep an eye on usage in light of the current issues and also had a look at  synch speed which is down to 1000 Kbps
Router stats show the WAN link has been up for over 400 hours

Connection Status

Connection Time 401:11:36
Connecting to Server Connected
Negotiation Success
Authentication Success
Getting IP Addresses 87.112.92.xx (last octet rmoved for obvious reasons)
Getting Network Mask 255.255.255.255

Modem status
ADSL Firmware Version  A2pB023b.d20e
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 1184 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
VPI 0
VCI 38
Could a helpful PN person have a look at the connection data from your end and shed any light on what has happened?

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

Thanks Chilly.
Just querying as it has been happy enough between 1500 and 2000 and has just dropped all of a sudden.
Am keen to try and get any bugs squashed if I can before my exchange goes over to ADSL 2+ and I end up with a dire connection like I had on O2 which is the reason I left.

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

I would suggest getting a Netgear DG834G v4 so that you can use DMT and Routerstats to monitor your connection and tweak the default noise margin

Is that the current model Jim?

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

Yes - but some places are still selling the old one.
I bought mine from here which actually says that it is the V4 http://www.dslsource.co.uk/netgear-dg834.aspx
This is what DMT shows - note I use Routerstats for monitoring as it can create a text log which is great for history

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

I've seen murmurings of a V5 being available, but the V4 is seen as the superior board.

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

It looks like it might have been caused by an increase in noise margin, given that your router is currently attaining 11dB.
Definitely worth getting a piece of hardware that will work with DMT to see if you can force it down to 6dB and maintain stability.

From a quick check found the following
Quote
Just found out the DG834Gv5 has a Conexant CX94610 chipset, so if you want Broadcom best avoid this one

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

Wish I'd known of this when I shelled out for the Rangemax last year.
I might just keep on truckin' with this for the time being but revisit if it becomes an issue when it goes all 21CN round here.

Is it going to be possible to stay on an ADSL equivalent grade circuit if 2+ is too unstable? (James or other PN person)

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

oh stuff it
Just ordered one from DSL source.
Hoping it'll sort things out as cant risk my home connection becoming unreliable, particularly as I'm hoping to be job hunting at end of next year when I get my networking quals.
Thanks for the info Jim and thanks for taking a look James

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

We're not far enough into our ADSL2+ trials to be able to confirm, but I'd doubt that we would move customers onto WMBC against their will, at least definitely not in the next 12 months.

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

You *should* be able to force a standard ADSL connection from your router if it lets you choose the type.  A lot of routers let you choose between Auto (or Multimode), ADSL, ADSL2+, ADSL2 etc.  The MSANs will need to be backward compatible with a lot of older hardware which won't support ADSL2+.
(This is certainly the case on my neighbour's BE line - he needed to manually change the setting in his router from ADSL to ADSL2+ to get speeds above 8Meg - he's not using their BEBox but a Draytek router.)
Edit: typo

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

Your exchange checker shows that BT have given a provisional go live date of 31st March 2009 so am assuming that this means the old kit in the exchange building is powered down and removed from the racks/cabinets and all customers are connected to the new kit so unless it is technically possible (and BT are willing to let ISPs do it)  it is likely that all customers currently on IPStream Max will be migrated to 2+ grade circuits yes? (have had to gain a bit of knowledge of the wholesale product names over the years in order o engage in discussion with tech support at various ISPs when I've had problems) but my knowledge of 21CN apart from it being IP based is somewhat limited.

Oh please bring on fibre to the home!

Re: Synch speed down to 1000 Kbps why?

Just for info
the DG834N I'm using now autodetects so couldn't force it down to ADSL 2 (I didn't want to use the O2 box when I was with them).
