Sync, ping and upload same as always, download speed halved.

Does anything look odd here? LAN cable connection, have rebooted router etc:
BT Wholesale test reports:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 2.45 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 6.54 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.79Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps

Router reports:
7 - Data rate:	984/7405
8 - Maximum data rate: 996/7536
9 - Noise margin: 6.0/2.5
10 - Line attenuation: 25.9/49.5
12 - Data sent/received: 7.8M/22.7M

In other words, everything is the same, but download speed has halved and I had trouble completeing speedtest.net tests several times - download just stopped while other sites were up.
(note: BT test concurs with speedtest, so not a speedtest.net problem)

Re: Sync, ping and upload same as always, download speed halved.

Hi Racquel,
Yes things do look odd!  Is your router monkeying around with the DS SNRM?
The DS synch speed is way over the top for the line's reported attenuation; 5.5+Mbps is the most I'd expect on a 50dB line at 6dB.
Your line is attempting 7.5Mbps at 2.5dB.  I suspect that the 'benefit' of the higher synch speed achieved by pushing down the SNRM is completely lost by the resultant increase in line errors, requiring data to need to be retransmitted.
If your router is not monkeying around with the SNRM, then you might see a marked improvement in data speed by having the synch rate reduced by an increased Target SNRM of 6dB.  If the target is already 6dB, then the above stats indicate the presence of interference.
Is the phone line quiet?  Dial 17070 option2.
Kevin

Re: Sync, ping and upload same as always, download speed halved.

Thanks.
No idea how I could tell if there was any monkeying going on - all I know is that it's been fine until this morning.
Quiet line test OK - volume good, no crackling. Don't really want to reduce sync speed much as it's only recently we've got a stable iplayer HD stream.
Apparently we were promised FTTC over a year ago - all they keep doing is coming out and patching the line up when the little plastic pole-dildos fall off, dangle upside-down and fill with water.
Still, it's good to know that it's "in our area".... (hmmm).

You do not need 7+Mbps to do that.  If the higher synch speed drives down your effective data speed (which is what is really important) you will improve the effective data speed by reducing the synch speed because there will be fewer errors on the line.
When you stated that the speed test was over a cable, was the wifi interface on the PC (if it has one) turned off?  Just because there is a cable between the PC and the router, one should not assume that it will be used in preference to an (also) active wifi connection.
@CRT,
What is the target SNRM on this line please?  How stable has it been of recent times?

Re: Sync, ping and upload same as always, download speed halved.

Does anyone know how many days Plusnet are currently taking to get round to tickets?
Nothing at all since this last action:

There was a brief time yesterday when I could actually do stuff, but as you can see from below, it's back to normal now.
TEST_DATE	      DOWNLOAD   UPLOAD   LATENCY_MS
14/01/2016 06:34 1777 777       39
13/01/2016 11:07 5179 835       30

11/01/2016 11:34 2481 825       32

Router stats and BT speed test/IP profile have changed though...
7 - Data rate:	976/3367
8 - Maximum data rate: 988/6496
9 - Noise margin: 6.2/16.9
10 - Line attenuation: 25.8/46.5

Download speedachieved during the test was - 2.85 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 1.2 Mbps-4 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 2.97 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.82Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps

Re: Sync, ping and upload same as always, download speed halved.

Looks like the line has been capped / the target SNRM has been jacked up to achieve stability.
This needs CRT input.

There should be a comment that fault investigations aren't included in that average:

These question handling stats relate to questions directed at our front-line support team. More complex issues, fault investigations and issues that require the help of other departments within the business may take longer to turnaround.

I'm taking a look at the line tests now.

Re: Sync, ping and upload same as always, download speed halved.

The SNR margin is set at 3db, however the SNR is currently at 17.1db. This would normally suggest the line has become banded, however the profile of the line doesn't show that.
There haven't been many disconnections, but each disconnection seems to have the sync rate varying significantly.
I've put a reset through on your line, and will leave the fault ticket open for our faults team to investigate further.
Are you plugged in to the master socket? The changes in SNR and sync are concerning and it's good to check everything is connected as well as it can be.

Re: Sync, ping and upload same as always, download speed halved.

Thanks!
Yup! The only thing plugged in.
In fact, following a suggestion last year, it's plugged directly into the socket behind the master socket (test socket?), which gained us another mb or so.
It's been fine (if you consider 4-5mb "fine" in 2016) up until the last couple of weeks.
Remember, we're at the end of a long crappy line of overhead wires.. doesn't help.

Re: Sync, ping and upload same as always, download speed halved.

OK, things seem a little snappier now; I've just done a speed test and we're getting a blazing fast 4.8Mb/sec, which is at least workable.
Many thanks for doing the reset.

Re: Sync, ping and upload same as always, download speed halved.

Can you please post current router stats.  I'm concerned that the improvement will inky be temporary until the DLM kicks in again.  Hopefully though faults will have found something in that time frame.
