Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

The agent kept to his word and SNR was reset to 6dB around 10:30 this morning Smiley
The connection has gone back to ITU-T G.992.5.
[quote=Stats]Uptime: 0 days, 3:21:20
DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.5
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 888 / 5.923
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]: 406,53 / 1,37
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,7 / 0,0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 25,2 / 47,5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6,3 / 5,8
I note that the Attenuation has gone up to 47.5 from 44.5 last night- why would this be? The Attentuation never changed when the SNR was increased from 6 to 9dB - is this symptomatic of a problem still on the line?
Edit: BT profile is currently 5.22 but PN's is set to 5.9.

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

It's unlikely to be symbolic of a problem with the line - but certainly something we could do with keeping an eye on though.
I think the best thing to do would be to keep an eye on things for a week or so and see how the line performs.

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

Will do.
So far so good - the only drop since the repair being subsequent to the SNR reset this morning as far I can see Smiley

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

Further update...
Still had quite a few drops since the line as fixed last month.
To eliminate the router being a potential issue I swapped in my HH2 (used this as it saved having to change IP addresses across all devices).
I still got the odd drop (last one was about 5 days ago) but was much more stable with a sync of around 5500, SNR around 6dB and Att reported at 44.5dB.
Lost connection again around 20 minutes ago, latest stats:
Quote
Line state Connected
Connection time 0 days, 0:18:57
Downstream 5,429 Kbps
Upstream 872 Kbps
ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.5
Latency type Interleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up) 6.5 dB / 5.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 47.0 dB / 24.9 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 0.0 dBm / 12.9 dBm

I note that the Att has gone back up to 47dB.
Could someone have a look into this, please?
Edit: Just had another drop, new stats:
Quote
Line state Connected
Connection time 0 days, 0:01:08
Downstream 5,511 Kbps
Upstream 888 Kbps
ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.5
Latency type Interleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up) 6.2 dB / 5.8 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 47.0 dB / 24.9 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 0.0 dBm / 12.9 dBm

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

I can see the drops you're referring to:
<img src="http://community.plus.net/visualradius/generated/image13952481461726.png"/>
I wouldn't say they are anything to worry about though unless this starts to happen on a regular basis.
I've taken a look over your line and everything looks fine. If you could keep an eye on it and if this continues to happen, please let us know.

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

Thanks for the reply, Chris.
I was concerned more about the increase in Att. It's not because of the change of router as the HH2 was reporting it as 44.5dB - same as the Thomson - till this afternoon's increase.

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

It's not the best sign when it does change, however, as the change is very little, I'd not be too worried.
It's really service impacting if your Line Attenuation jumps quite significantly.

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

Ok - I'll monitor the connection closely again.
It's just a shame the HH2 isn't compatible with either RouterStats or ThinkBroadband monitor.

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

I agree - it'd be really useful to have for a look at the bigger picture to be honest.

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

I do have a Netgear but don't want to change IP addresses.
I lent my other Thomson (v8, I think) to my daughter who has never used it so will ask her to return it.

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

The stats posted in this thread give the attenuation as 44.5 on ADSL2 and 47 on ADSL2+. The difference could just be due to the attenuation being calculated over higher frequencies on ADSL2+. Different routers can report different things as the attenuation, for example they could report the attenuation over all the frequencies in use, or instead report the attenuation at 300kHz.

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

Thanks for that info, ejs.
It will be interesting to see what the Thomson displays when I get it back.
But, your post still doesn't explain how the Attenuation changed on the same router from 44.5 to 47 Undecided

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

It does in that the 44.5 was when connected as G.992.3, and the 47 are all when connected as G.992.5. It's the difference is between ADSL2 and ADSL2+.

Re: Sudden drop in sync and no dial tone

The HH2 has always connect as G.992.5 both with the 44.5 and now 47 Atts since using it from around 12 or so days ago.
