I have an illness whereby I need to sleep at night in order to function in the daytime so this is playing hell with my health at the moment having to gateway hop into the early hours so it looks like I'll have to move on as I can't carry on like this

which shows you have an exchange congestion problem, you would get a similar result with any ISP like PN that use BT for their ADSL connections.

You have a problem with your connection to the exchange and your current sync speed indicates it is an ongoing issue. I suggest you start a separate topic giving the stats reported by the router and we'll help you work through it.
