This is just a question.
My connection speed has consistently been around 6260 - 372. In the last few weeks I have noticed it become slower 5457- 374 kbps and today it got down to 4664 - 376 kbps.
I rebooted the router/modem and lo the speed is now back at 6244 - 376 kbps.
The question is why should rebooting / renewing the connection solve the problem and should one adopt a practice of rebooting and renewing the connection on a regular basis and if so how often?

Your router probably resynched at the dead of night when the noise on the line is highest and hence the speed would be lower
Doing a resync during the day as you just have gets it back up.
One possible reason for the big difference is if the bell wire is connected - have a read here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm
