I followed the instructions step by step religiously as per the link Jim kindly gave.
I am getting error after step 7. i.e no connection made to internet on neither windows 7 or vista...
I am pasting the error on windows 7..

Sorry its a bit tiny. It says the modem [or other connecting device] has reported an error.. IS it a faulty modem???

I dont have screenshot of error on Vista . But it said

"internet connectivity was unsuccessful"

It might be worth trying a factory reset of the modem, rather than just rebooting it.
But! I don't think you should do anything more to the modem today.  The DLM might be getting excited by now and we don't want that to go banding you and complicating things even more.

What amazes me is the extremely different numbers:
Current line speed : 78 mbps
estimated line speed : 34 mbps 
what i get now :14 mbps 
so there is something grossly wrong.. looks like the modem from those tests to me... if so will openreach replace it?

Another point I noticed only now on the router...
Green lights for internet, broadband , ethernet and wifi are flashing intermittently.
Is that an issue?
