Speed issue

Hi, my problem is that as i set up a relatives broadband yesterday evening i realised they were getting about 2.5 times the speed i get, i think it was about 1170Kbps. My speed is around 480Kbps downstream and 244Kbps upstream. They are also with plusnet. They live literally 10 meters to the left of me so i don't think its the distance to the exchange. We both live in the next village over from our exchange so were not that close.
My Router stats are:
Downstream    Upstream

Data rate (Kbps)
576 288

Noise margin (dB)
23.3 20.0

Output power (dBm)
16.4 11.7

Attenuation (dB)
63.0 31.5
I know i have a huge attenuation, but i read that your noise margin can be lowered to balance speed and stability? if this is true then cant my noise margin be lowered to about 10-15? as most instability faults occur at around 6 dB?
I also heard that removing the bell wire can rid the phone line of some noises that can be picked up through the bell wire.
If someone could clarify this and maybe make some suggestions it would be most appreciated.
Thanks very much
David

The 288 upstream tells me you are still on a fixed speed product. The upgrade to Max was altered to an opt-in basis due to the problems that occurred when this was originally released. Let me know if you want moving to the 'upto' 8Mb product and I'll place the modify order for you. It won't cost you any extra and with your line stats you may see a slight increase in speed.

Re: Speed issue

With 63dB attenuation you could get 2mbps if you're lucky.
That might involve some work sorting out your phone wiring (in your house) though.
Make the change and post your stats.  Cheesy

Re: Speed issue

Wow... I didn't think i would be able to get much faster, but yeah sure if you could put me on the Up to 8Mb Package that would be great!
Also I'm wired straight into the Master socket as a BT technician said it was easier to do that. (I think there was some complications)
Ok so to confirm I would like to be upgraded to the Up to 8Mb package. Thanks very much for both of your prompt posts, It has given me renewed faith in my line!
Thanks alot!

Re: Speed issue

Done, the order should complete in the morning and then you'll begin the 10 day training period. Hopefully once your line settles you'll see some improvement on your speeds.

Don't wait, report back soon after your first sync, with the attenuation, SNRM and speed.  Cheesy

Re: Speed issue

Ok heres my very first check of the stats this morning!

Downstream    Upstream

Data rate (Kbps)
3072 448

Noise margin (dB)
5.6 15.0

Output power (dBm)
17.7 12.3

Attenuation (dB)
63.0 31.5

Its amazing! No changes in actual speeds but i know they will be updating that after 3 days.
Thanks alot for helping me sort this out!

Re: Speed issue

That's very good, but don't be surprised if it drops a bit below 3mbps during the settling in period. Looks like you'll get the 2mbps I said you might get!

Re: Speed issue

Hi David,
I've given your connection profile a bit of a poke.
Try rebooting your router.  I suspect you might be in for a nice suprise Smiley

Re: Speed issue

I honestly have so much to thank you guys for!  Cheesy
My line stats are:

Downstream    Upstream

Data rate (Kbps)
2976 448

Noise margin (dB)
5.6 15.0

Output power (dBm)
17.6 12.3

Attenuation (dB)
63.0 31.5
And after a speed test from http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ the results are:
Last night before the changes -  483 kbps (60.4kB/s)  372 kbps (46.5kB/s)
Today after the changes -  1945 kbps (243kB/s)  345 kbps (43.1kB/s)

I just have to say that im so impressed at the speed this was done!
Also one other thing, does this mean the 10 day period doesn't apply now? or can my speed still drop?
Thanks!

Re: Speed issue

The 10 day period will still apply, so try to turn your router off at least once a day (first thing in the morning is usually good as it is likely you will sync at a nice high rate due to the laws of physics ;))
I suspect your line will stabilise and you'll get around a 2 Meg profile.. which is nice.. Smiley
