Speed help

Hi
I am looking for some help. I have recently had plusnet BB installed. So far I am happy and the speeds are averaging at 1.9mbs download. Thats better than previously but not as fast as my neighbours have (about 3mbs). I have had brief spells at 2.3mbs.
I notice that on the netgear modem settings, the downstream connection speed is 2688 mbs. This never changes. When I look on the plusnet site I see a line speed of 7150. I therefore assume that its possible that I may be able to get speeds faster than what I have.
Is this likely to be the case? Any help appreciated.

Re: Speed help

The Plusnet line speed is their equivalent to the IP profile and that number means it hasn't received an update from the automatic systems
Can you run the BT speedtest and report the results also provide the full stats from your router (speeds, noise margin and attenuation)

Re: Speed help

Those results are very good for your attenuation.
The only other thing you can check is what effect using the test socket, without anything else connected, makes.

Re: Speed help

Thanks
I'm in the master socket already with a socket filter and good cable!
Oh well. I was hoping that I may get a try at adsl 2+ paying for the pro package. I guess maybe I need to downgrade if no faster speeds are possible?

Re: Speed help

adsl2 will probably make it worse and is available on all the current packages
you could still try the test socket which isolates all your internal wiring but I don't hold out much hope

You are missing the Jim's point,  you need to test your router while connected to the TEST SOCKET which is located inside the MASTER SOCKET.
Just being connected to the front outside master socket is NOT the same thing as you will be getting noise pick-up from your extension wiring !

Re: Speed help

Hi
Sorry, I meant that it was in the test socket.

Re: Speed help

In which case you are doing as well as can be expected - in fact even better

Re: Speed help

Is it possible to change the downstream connection speed on the router?

Re: Speed help

Not really
If you have the right sort of router you can change the default noise margin which will change the connection speed but as you are already on 6dB you won't get much if any improvement.
Remember that you presently have a 2000kbps IP profile and to get the next step up of 2500kbps you would need a stable sync speed in excess of 2848kbps which is very unlikely

Re: Speed help

I wouldn't mind seeing that though. BT always estimated the max speed as 0.5 - 1Mb. It was always higher. We live in a small group of 8 houses down a country lane. We are all on the same main BT line which then branches of to each house. My neighbours have stable speeds 3Mb. Whilst my speed is better than I had its still only 60% of my neighbours speeds. Thats why I am wondering.
Secondly, I am on the prioritised pro service. Is there any point in this.
Lastly, thanks for your help and sticking with this.

The pro product will have no effect whatsoever.
The argument for pro is for full speed downloads not higher sync speeds as the connection between you and the exchange is unaffected by the product.
If your neighbours are getting 3Mb speeds then it is likely that your wires are longer/poorer than theirs and there is nothing you can do about it.
I am assuming that they are using a BT based system and not LLU which might give better speeds although I would have doubted that you would see that much difference
