Re: Speed Thread (Before and after transfer speed comparisons)

Yes please James.
I assume you can deduct the £6-99 from my bank account via direct debit.  Cry Cry
My Netgear seems to be trying to use g.dmt to connect and the wireless end suffers.
(Don't ask me why).
What is the expected delivery date?

Hi Jeremy,
I'd actually need it to be a one off card payment.
If I order it tonight, I'd expect you to have it on Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest.

Re: Speed Thread (Before and after transfer speed comparisons)

Here's today's figure after a modem reboot again.

Attached is the most recent graph from http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk Overall everything is pretty stable, if a little disappointing.
Interesting point however, BBC iPlayer on my iphone this morning seemed pretty smooth without any annoying pauses so overall an improvement here although You tube on the same device was a bit hiccupy. Obviously using wifi for that but a wired imac for speed test.
Cannot do speed test with iphone as it's a flash based test which doesn't work on the iphone  Angry

Re: Speed Thread (Before and after transfer speed comparisons)

Since yesterday morning each time the router has resynced, either as a result of a reboot or due to the connection being lost, the downstream sync rate has increased and the upstream sync rate has decreased as shown by the following three BT speed tests that I managed to obtain - the BT speedtester has been a bit temperamental on ADSL2+.  The connection was lost today at 12:10 but had been stable for 24 hours prior to that.

Re: Speed Thread (Before and after transfer speed comparisons)

Since I last posted, my connection became a little unstable and disconnected a number of times.  As a result, the upstream and downstream sync speeds have been adjusting themselves downwards.  On Saturday the up/down sync speeds were 855/12,526 and currently they are 810/11,581.  The line seems to be more stable at this lower sync speed and last night the downstream SN Margin never dropped below 6.0 dB, whereas on the two previous evenings it fell to 5.0 dB.  My IP Profile according to the BT Speedtester is now 10,000 kbps, although it is still being reported as 9,000 kbps in the PlusNet Member Centre.  However, this hasn't impeded my download speeds which have increased as a result - see stats below:

... there is a tool that gives people an estimate of the speed that their line is likely to provide.

Interesting that BT tool has over the years I have had ADSL has slowly changed the information it reports from showing 2.5Mb to now showing 1Mb!
If there is anybody else out there that has kept an Eagle eye on this noticed the same would be interesting to know.
Now BT has a vested interest is doing this so people do not complain.

Re: Speed Thread (Before and after transfer speed comparisons)

Hi all
My new broadband was activated today and so far there has been a notable increase in speed. Bearing in mind my first test was at peak times I am very happy with the results. Please see attached pre and post ADSL2+ modem screenshots. I am not sure if PN needs to update my BRAS profile.
Early days yet.
The speed test showed over 10MBps of download. I would have been happier with a snappier upload but I guess I'll have to wait....

It would be too simplistic to say that as I was getting around 50% ± of the "up to 8M" connection that I could expect around 50%± of 24M but to actually get around the same after several reboots of the modem indicates that there is a long way to go yet.

Doesn't work like that unfortunately. ADSL2+ works best on really good short lines, if you can get above about 4.5-5Mbps on ADSL then you'll see an increase in speed with ADSL2+. If you're below about 1.5Mbps again you'll see an increase in speed. But for lines between about 1.5Mbps to 4.5Mbps the actual speed is unlikely to increase by much. Have a look at the graph here:
http://www.internode.on.net/residential/internet/home_adsl/extreme/
If you're in that middle band then ADSL2+ doesn't really do much to increase the speed unfortunately.

Yes James, I am happy to continue testing as it does give us some idea of how this all works in real world difficult line conditions.
I am wondering if I mucked things up by forcing a lower S/N figure here? - It now appears that the exchange have somehow limited sync to just over 3000 and I cannot get above that figure whatever I do with DMT tool.

That's probably the DLM kicking in, with what it thinks is a very unstable line it has a new set of line profiles that work differently and cap the max speed, so long as it remains stable it will move the line profile back up the chain and let it sync at a higher rate.

Re: Speed Thread (Before and after transfer speed comparisons)

Thanks Dave, I am syncing at over 4000 now ADSL1. But still limited to under 2500 data rate on tests, PN show Max stable rate 3500.

That's disappointing to hear, I was kind of hoping for a bit more speed up and down but it seems I'm at the optimum  Cry

I'm not sure why you are crying. Look on the bright side, you've got a very significant increase in your upload speed (more than I'm currently paying an extra £8 per month for!).
