Speed Help!

Hi guys,
Im really not sure if im receiving the speeds im supposed to, but before i look into it id like some advice.
Im an old customer and have the PlusNet Broadband Premier Option 1 package. I have been receiving 992kb/s download rate. Reading a few posts on here i can see these rates vary, but ive come up against a problem with the BTspeedtest i need to run. I use a DG438PN ADSL router and im getting an error. On test 2 im asked to use the test login, but after connecting it says my account is not linked to my line.
I think im being an idiot, but i just wondered if anyone had the answer to save me pulling my hair out all night!
Thanks

Re: Speed Help!

You need to put in the name you connect to plusnet with in your router e.g. adiewoo@plusdsl.net
You could also post your router stats.

Re: Speed Help!

Two things, you have to have an up todate Java.
The user name you put in is the same as the one in your router.  Username@F9.co.uk or Username@freeonline.net or username@plusdsl.net
Adie beat me to it but being an old customer, those are the others
Oh and welcome to the Forums

Re: Speed Help!

Hi chaps, thanks for the welcome!
Java was the culprit, i hadn't updated it! My results are as follows:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 992 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  288 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 750 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 637 kbps
My Netgear Diagnostics are:
System Up Time 59:17:57
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 4083 5227 0 149 788 01:33:16
LAN 10M/100M 1132307 733294 0 5554 752 59:17:53
WLAN 11M/54M/108M 870504 429714 0 4989 319 59:17:48

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 992 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 43.0 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 10.7 db 7.0 db

Now please forgive my lack of knowledge on this subject, but do you think im hitting anywhere near the potential? I live in a shared house and have 3 or 4 connections connected constantly. Over the past few weeks we have experienced some really boggy sessions.
Again, thanks for any help! Embarrassed

Re: Speed Help!

I think you are on a fixed 1mb line, 288 upload speed indicates this, you should be able to do much better if you move on to ADSL max.

Re: Speed Help!

There is something wrong with those stats.
The upstream rate would indicate a fixed speed product but your downstream rates don't match and you don't have an IP profile on a fixed speed product
However looking at the attenuation figure of 43dB you should be getting far higher speeds on MaxDSL or higher noise margin with a fixed speed product than that.
My first thought is that you have an unfiltered device somewhere in your property. (like someone has just got a Sky box)
Can you connect the router to the test socket without anything else connected and report back the router stats

Re: Speed Help!

That doesn't make any sense at all
Which Netgear router do you have
Basically there is a lot of noise on the line.
The reason your upstream speed is so low is the 8dB noise margin and similarly the downstream rate is noise margin limited.
If you plug the phone in with nothing else connected and do the quiet line test 17070 option 2 without the router connected do you hear any noise. If you do I would report that to your phone provider without mentioning broadband
Fundamentally something is screwing up your connection big time and it is either in the property or in the BT part.
After checking everything in the house and trying a different filter, cable and router if possible you will need to raise a fault.

Re: Speed Help!

Also there are no phones/sky etc in the house. Just the router with one wired connection, and 3 wireless. Huh

Its a netgear DG438PN

A fixed speed line doesn't have variable speeds and the speeds don't match the fixed speed rates either

Re: Speed Help!

With that Netgear you can use DMTv8.07 http://dmt.mhilfe.de/ ; - this will give a result a bit like this which will tell us a lot more

Re: Speed Help!

To add - this is what mine looked like when I had problems on my line - note the upstream speeds
Compare the shape and height of the green part which is the upstream bit loading with the previous image

Re: Speed Help!

The copy ive just downloaded is in german!
Can you remember which details need to be entered into the program?
If there is a problem with my line,  what would you recommend to sort it out?

Re: Speed Help!

When you install it you have the option to select English
PM sent - with further info
Basically you will need to complete a fault report to take it further https://faults.plus.net/applications.php?Module=Faults
