Spam in duplicate & triplicate

Today I have been receiving spam email, not unusual but the emails are
A) not being marked as spam
B) are coming through in triplicate via Imap
C) coming through  in duplicate via pop3
Anyone else getting this?

Have you checked that spam filtering is definitely turned on in the Manage My Mail tool?

Are there three copies of each email if you check them in Webmail?

What mail client are you using? It's also worth checking the message headers of each of the emails to see if the message ID is the same.

I've not noticed it and am yet to see any other reports.

Re: Spam in duplicate & triplicate

Also check any message rules in your email client in case that is generating the duplicates.
If you look at the headers, see if the message-ID is the same or different. If different, they are completely separate emails and not duplicates.

Re: Spam in duplicate & triplicate

This is happening to me too. Three identical mails via IMAP: Message-IDs are the same. No rules in client.
Envelope-to is a random number @ "my domain". Looks like someone has got hold of a list of usernames.

Re: Spam in duplicate & triplicate

Hi Bob
Sorry for the slow response I have been away this week.
Spam Filtering is on
There were three copies or two copies accordingly (same as pop3) via Imap
I am using Outlook with no rules applied to the account in question
Can't check the headers as the emails have been deleted
I see donny had the same thing, do we have an issue here?

Re: Spam in duplicate & triplicate

It's quite normal for spammers to BCC one email to several of your addresses at the same time - the emails you receive will look identical. You can tell if this is the case by looking at the top of the headers for the "Envelope-to: " line this will tell you the address that copy was sent to (whether TO, CC or BCC). I frequently get apparently duplicate emails that when I look closely were obviously as a result of them using BCC.

Re: Spam in duplicate & triplicate

The ones I have today are duplicates and are not cc or bcc to the same address. Each email is addressed the same.
Anyway I will be able to check on that in future.
Thanks

Are the "Message-ID:" lines identical?

Re: Spam in duplicate & triplicate

mmm interesting
I checked the headers on some pop 3 duplicated mail that was spam, but not marked as such, and the message ID were identical
I checked the headers on Imap dulpicated mail correctly marked as spam and the Message ID were different.

Re: Spam in duplicate & triplicate

I suggest you need to monitor the mailbox you collect using POP3 with webmail (or another IMAP program) before you download the emails using POP3. That will determine at what stage the emails are being duplicated.
