So I was advised to join the 21CN trial.........

Basically I've been suffering from speed problems most of the weekend and had a dramatic fall from when I first joined plusnet from 180K download speeds to just about 80 odds. I was advised that I should join 21CN trial as there's nothing found that's wrong with my line apparently and my speeds aren't too great. Was I even wise to apply in the first place? My other option was to raise a fault but for cert I know nothing would be found wrong and I would be liable probably for a BT engineer charge (which I simply can't afford)

Re: So I was advised to join the 21CN trial.........

Can you:
Post your router stats (sync, noise margin and attenuation) (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php gives instructions for many routers)
Post the results from http://www.speedtester.bt.com/
Tell us what https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=stable_rate says for your current line speed.
Also describe your setup (how many telephone sockets, what other equipment (e.g. answer phones, Sky boxes, alarms etc) you also have), where the router is plugged in)

Phone's connected to the main socket with an Iplate fitted. It's also a NETGEAR DG834GV3 Router i'm using although i've requested that I get a new 1 from plusnet.

Re: So I was advised to join the 21CN trial.........

You're never going to get wonderful speeds given how far you are from the exchange (pop your attenuation in to http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php), but you should be getting better than you are.
Can you try plugging the filter and router in to the test socket (without putting a phone in the other socket on the filter) and post the bottom half of the router statistics page where it gives the Connection Speed, Line Attenuation and noise margin. These are the only thing we need to look at at the moment. The 13db noise margin suggests where may be something giving some interference on the line.
When you use the phone is there any background noise? You can check this out using the BT quiet line test - dial 17070 and use option 2. If there is any noise try it again with the phone plugged in to the test socket and if you can try with another handset (wired is better than cordless for this check).
You haven't said if you have any other extensions and what other equipment you have plugged in to any phone sockets.
The test socket is inside the master socket:

Re: So I was advised to join the 21CN trial.........

Having done my first initial quiet line test (plugging a phone into my filter and doing 17070 option 2) I heard a very slight kind of whirring but I would suspect nothing big. As soon as I can find a screwdriver (this should be fun hunting my room)  Tongue I'll see what I can gather from it.
I put in 59DB on the kitz thingy and I got:
dslMax 2752Kbps (IP Profile 2000kbps)
adsl2+ (21CN)  2944kbps (IP Profile 2500kbps)
adsl2+ (LLU) 2944kbps (Throughput 2605kbps)
Forgot to add when i'm testing with the test socket should I have my iplate plugged in? or have that totally out the way?

Re: So I was advised to join the 21CN trial.........

Best to take that out of the way as well.
If the sync looks better when using the test socket it is a case of carefully putting this back one by one to see what causes the problems.

I was getting terrible speeds on ADSL and have just been moved onto ADSL2+. Whilst I'm not getting the advertised speeds of 'up to' 24 MB (I share my bathroom with the exchange Wink it's that close) I am getting 6MB at most times of the day. Compare that to 1/2 Meg on ADSL and it's looking pretty good. (BT also confirmed nothing wrong with my line)
So in short, look forward to a faster service (Hopefully :D)

Re: So I was advised to join the 21CN trial.........

The thing is before I joined BT? (I was with aquiss before) I had a pretty healthy 2MB Fixed. OK Not the fastest ever but that was fast enough for me (and as good as I'm likely to get) it's been ever since I joined and left BT that my problems have began (and even then I had to force my way off of BT due to failing to be able to supply me with their BT Vision which they said I could get when I first signed up)

Ouch! That noise margin is too low - the router is struggling to hold sync at that speed - pretty soon the number of errors it gets will cause it to resync at a lower speed which will give a higher margin.
What we've done so far is to demonstrate that internal telephone wiring and other equipment is the cause of your problem.
A couple of things to confirm:
1. You are using standard length cables (a filter with about a 6" lead and a a filter to router lead of about 6 ft with no other extension leads).
2. The router isn't near any electrical equipment  (at least 3 ft separation) including your PC (noisy PC power supplies have been known to cause problems).

Re: So I was advised to join the 21CN trial.........

I would say fairly standard cables....I guess it's fairly standard cables.
The PC itself is only a few months old. No idea of distance and whatever. I know PC'S on a table if it helps!  Tongue God i've got no idea what else I can do or if it was even wise to apply for the 21CN. Would be wasting my time raising a fault I suspect...........

Re: So I was advised to join the 21CN trial.........

Although the sync speed you are now getting is not where it should be, it is better than you were getting.
I'd like to see where the speed stabilises in the test socket before moving on. Can you turn the router off, wait a few minutes and then power it up using the test socket again. I'd like to see it syncing with a noise margin of at least 6 and see what the speed is then.

No idea if it will help me either and I know it's unofficial (possibly illegal but what do I know)  Tongue I upgraded my DG834GV3 Router to something called DGTeam? Got their firmware on the router now. See if that helps any.

That will give us a good comparison.
Forget all the other tests - this is all you need to look at at the moment. I wouldn't change the firmware just yet - we don't want to confuse things by making too many changes at the same time as we might not be able to tell what made a difference.

You still haven't answered how many phone extensions you have. Can you put the front back on the master socket, plug in the filter and router only (definitely no phone handset), make sure there is absolutely nothing plugged in to any other telephone socket anywhere else in the house and then get the above stats again.
Depending on what they show will determine the next step.
