Slow upload 443kbps and intermittent issues

Hi All,

I'm still waiting for the explanation from the ISP as to why I have such a low upload speed and dropping connections but in the meantime I wanted to see if any technical people on this forum could have a reasonable explanation to my problems.

As with all the stories the problem started when I changed the ISP. I was in the past with PlusNet and had no problems, I moved to Post Office and had no problems and when switched back to PlusNet the internet is not as it was before.

I'm on ADSL2+ using PlusNet 2704N router.

Does anybody have any reasonable explanation why the Upstream speed is 443 when the line can handle 1228Kbps. Even the engineer from Openreach that came around was surprised. He changed all the cabling between the house and the exchange and internal socket. They seen some issue initially but were not sure what it was. His speed tests indicated that I should be able to achieve 20+ Mb download and 1Mb upload as I'm very close to the exchange. PlusNet says that they don't cap this but reading the forum it feels like it is not the true.

The other surprising thing is that the SNR. How can it be so low for download 3.1 and so high for upload 33.8 dB?

Any help would be appreciated, below is my xDSL:

Re: Slow upload 443kbps and intermittent issues

@Daniel_P I'm guessing something is wrong with your connection somewhere - your U/S SNR is way too high, (I think) given your closeness to the exchange and the fact that you can achieve the D/S speed you can.

Can you run the BT speedtest from here https://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ making sure you complete the advanced test, and post the result, preferably as a screen-shot?

Re: Slow upload 443kbps and intermittent issues

@jab1 spot on, this might be the problem.

Any advise who can change the IP Profile?

This are stats when I'm on WiFi with other devices connected at the same time:

@Daniel_P @jab1 the answer is simple, the line has been provisioned with a capped upstream. It's quite common with an ADSL provision (although it shouldn't be!) to cap the upstream at 448k. Often, capping the upstream on a marginal line can give a better downstream speed. In  your case, the line is very short and increasing the upstream speed won't bring the downstream speed down too much. Hopefully one of the Help team staff will see this and place an order to uncap your upstream.

As regards the dropping connections, that's probably because the DLM has decided your line is good and has reduced the downstream target SNR to 3db in an attempt to maximise the speed. You'd probably be more stable ( but with slightly reduced downstream speed ) on a fixed 6db margin.

Any advise who can change the IP Profile?

The profile is calculated by the DLM from the synch speed. so getting the upstream uncapped will cause the profile to increase

Thank you both for help @MisterW @jab1

@Gandalf

I just found a post where you were able to resolve similar problem in the past. Would you be bale to help with the same here?

Re: Slow upload 443kbps and intermittent issues

Fix

Hi Daniel,

I've changed the SNRM target of your line from 3dB to 6dB, and I've placed an order to uncap your upload speed, which should go through tomorrow. Let us know if there are further issues afterwards.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: Slow upload 443kbps and intermittent issues

@Gandalf thank you very much for applying the change. My profile changed already and speeds are back to normal.
