Today 00:26          6047 kbps (756kB/s)          381 kbps (47.6kB/s)
Yesterday 22:23    932 kbps (117kB/s)              266 kbps (33.3kB/s)
Yesterday 22:19    703 kbps (87.9kB/s)            264 kbps (33kB/s)
back to high speed again... but what will it be tonight? something like last night?
Yesterday 21:49    402 kbps (50.3kB/s)           263 kbps (32.9kB/s)
so it's 17 times faster this morning than the worst result that I checked last night.

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

Morning guys.
There was a bit more iplayer traffic on the network last night from about 6pm, which will probably have contributed towards the slowdowns you saw last night.
They'll be picked up when Dave is in and the business are aware of the issues that are being experienced.
We do know and we will do our best to fix them sooner rather than later.

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

Just been looking at the Sun Forums, my Speedtester problem seems to have been going on since January, could be a DNS fault and nothing to do with the router, also Firefox related. so will wait the oblig 3 hours and try with IE

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

Hi all,
We've identified an issue with one of our gateways (PTN-AG1), basically it had extra radius entries so was forcing more users on to there. So if you hit that gateway you'd have seen low speeds. We are balancing the network at the moment and speeds should be better this evening. If you do see slow speeds can you check which gateway you're on (http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway) and let me know.

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

Silly BT Tester.  I had not changed Java or Firefox since it was last succesfully used, but this is on I.E.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6252 kbps
I am on pte-ag2 and that was bad last night 1900 - 2100

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

You are currently connected to the "Telehouse North, Juniper 1" gateway. This gateway is sometimes known as ptn-ag1.
Perhaps that was the problem lastnight  Roll_eyes

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

Well I am on PTE-AG2, and speeds were poor last night. Will have a look tonight, and see what is happening.  It is worthwhile for one night shutting off the ellacoyas, then we can see if its a traffic management issue or something else, or having a subset of users who have been experiencing slow speeds, haveing traffic management disabled, for 1 night, and and back on so we can do some comparisons for you, and try and narrow down the cause of these issues.  Its probably a stupid idea, and not financially viable, but its just a thought.  As I am on PAYG, I would expect no slowdowns at any time, and indeed this is what I was finding up until a couple of months ago. TBH saying there is alot of this traffic and alot of that traffic last night, dosnt wash with me any more, I pay for my useage, and expect a decent service for my money. I dont want to leave BTW, just want this issue resolving.

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

If traffic management were to be turned off, your speeds would be worse.
The issues we're seeing are literally down to the volume of gold traffic.  Barring the gateway issue last night, which may have accentuated the problem for some, we're talking about the number of people being online at the same time, which I believe was a record for a Tuesday night.

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

Hi,
I've been having a look into this in detail this morning to see if there were any issues with the network and particular with the current traffic management setup.
From what I can see most of the issues seem to have been on PTN-AG1 last night which because of the maintenance yesterday morning had extra RADIUS entries to get it back in balance. One of the problems in doing that is that you get a bad mix of active/idle customers. Most people when they are connecting are going to be using their connections immediately so if you are pushing a higher percentage at one gateway you get much higher percentage of active customers on that gateway than the others.
Plus most of those customers will be using gold and titanium traffic so the mix of traffic is much more slanted towards the higher priority than lower priority traffic.
We think things should be better tonight as it will be more balanced across the network, plus we expect less people online because it's bonfire night. We  made few tweaks yesterday to try and improve general browsing performance which we should see clearer tonight. Please though let us know what you see.

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

Isnt that the issue then......  you have more customers using more gold/titanium traffic, and not the capacity to manage them, unless my thinking is wrong  Crazy  If the same things are to happen tonight, then what is the next step forward?  More central capacity, or more agressive traffic management, as something needs to happen somewhere, to ensure gold traffic is not dropped. I will see what my speeds look like tonight, and if they are laggy or not, and post speedtests results.  Glad this is being looked into, but I am unsure as to what the answers will be, as in my view, too many customers using the bandwidth is not really my problem

I think this says it all.

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

Tonight should be a lot quieter.
1) It's later on in the week and therefore naturally quieter.
2) It's Bonfire Night.
3) The network is more in balance after BT removed their double entries.

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

If you are maintaining one of the edge routers is it helpful if idle customers (like myself at those times of the morning) take our connections offline and then leave them down till perhaps the following evening?

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

Nope.
That would only be an issue if we were approaching our session limit.  Which we're not.

Re: Slow speeds afternoon and evening

There is still this "pulse" effect tonight on my ptn-ag2 connection. Using either bbmax or mybroadbandspeed the speedtest starts by flicking round to a bit over 3 MB/s, then "pulses" down until it settles at about 1MB/s. This connection normally speedtests, at almost all times of the day, at around 5MB/s-6MB/s.
the "browsing experience" is stuttery, laggy, bursty and not very nice.
pings are consistently in the range 35-45ms to both speedtesters and elsewhere.
