Slow Connection For Charity on Business Line

Hello
We are a charity that has been using plusnet for a number of years using a business line.  Recently we have been making more use of internet but have noticed that speeds are slow.  Our profile seems to be at 2000 but we are only about 1.8km form the exchange.
Should we be expecting more?
What steps do we need to take to see if we can get something better out of our connection.
Thanks, Mark

Re: Slow Connection For Charity on Business Line

Please post the stats from your router - noise margin, attenuation and speeds.
This explains how to get them http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

Re: Slow Connection For Charity on Business Line

Thanks for that.  This is what I see in the router:
                                                    Down                  Up
Connection Speed                  2656 kpbs        448 kpbs
Line Attenuation                      40 db                  22 db
Noise Margin                            11 db                  23 db

Re: Slow Connection For Charity on Business Line

If you put your attenuation in to http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php you will see you should be doing far better than that.
Are there multiple extensions on the phone line and if so is the router plugged in to the master or an extension?
Do you have an extension lead on the router to phone socket?

Welcome to the Forum
does you phone line go straight to the outside world, or does it go via the Hosrpital , I see your address is South Lodge, they seem to have been mucking around with NHS phones in Essex recently, i.e. how does the 800 patient line link in to yours?

Re: Slow Connection For Charity on Business Line

hi pierre_pierre, hi all
The line is direct with BT organised by ourselves and nothing to do with any hospital or patientline infrastructure...
There is other equipment and phones connected to the line so I guess that is our next port-of-call.....
I will report back!
Thanks for all your help

Re: Slow Connection For Charity on Business Line

Absolutely.
If you are amongst the fortunate majority you will find one telephone socket with some sort of BT logo and the lower part of the faceplate attached with two screws.  This is the BT Master Socket.  You can remove the screws and pull out the faceplate.  If your telephone extensions are correctly wired this should cut-off all the extensions as these should be wired in to this faceplate.  You need to check this and, obviously, you need to do this at a time when you are not expecting any important phone calls!  Then plug the router into the test socket that was behind the faceplate and see if the router stats have changed.

Have a read of http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/help_and_setup/microfilters.shtml
I think the last diagram on that page is going to be most relevant to you.

Actually this isn't very good as the picture captioned "Telephone Master Socket" doesn't look at all like a typical telephone master socket, it looks like a typical telephone extension socket!

Re: Slow Connection For Charity on Business Line

Sounds like a job for a faceplate filter (I don't mean the i-plate). IMO Plug-in Microfilters are a bit of a "Quick fix", and vulnerable to equipment getting moved around or confusion about the ports. Having said that I'll still use them if the house telephone wiring is simple and it seems to work. The way you say "Other equipment and phones" reads like more than one or two  extensions.
