Slow BB speed - any advice welcome

Hope someone can help  Smiley
I have the PlusNet Broadband Premier Option 1 and I believe that gives me up to 4 meg (although I may be wrong).
I recently moved into a new house and have had problems with BB speed ever since - after initially contacting PlusNet, BT came out and replaced by master socket which I was hopeful would resolve - they gave the wiring a clean bill of health at that point - although he did say that he had concerns about a second extension running off of the main incoming wire - it runs off of the main wire to the bedroom after it enters the property, but before it hits the master scoket - he still gave it a clean bill of health but said it may be cause fro concern in the furture.
I have the following:
Burglar Alarm feeds straight into master socket (hard wired)
Microfilter runs my Netgear router and phone
I did have my Sky box connected, but tihnking that this was the problem have had this disconnected since Friday
Basically I am getting about 500kbps even though I am told that I "should" be able to get up to 6 meg at the distance I am from the exchange - just under 1.5km.
The strange thing is that, since moving in I have been away for 4 or 5 days a couple of times and every time that I have returned and run a speed test it has shown at 3.5 meg only to get dragged back down to 500 within 48 hours.
Also occasionally when I am on xbox live and the phone rings, I am getting disconnected from Live.
I am loathe to call out BT again as they are threatening me with £££ charges if it is a problem with the hardware my end - I have tested multiple filters, modems and phones so am unsure how it could be but am now flat out of ideas!
If anyone can give me any suggestions I would be grateful - at some point during conversations with BT, an advisor suggested mutting in a multiple point master socket which sometimes helps but beyond that I am flat out of ideas...

Hiya,
For starters could you possibly try running a BT Speedtest from http://www.speedtester.bt.com ?

Hi - I have done that a number of times.
This is an example of a test run on 12th September:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 4864 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 4000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 674 kbps

Hi Dongle - 3 pertinent questions:
1. Has your alarm got a hard-wired ADSL filter? Check with your alarm maintainer if not sure.
2. Can you post some detailed stats from your router showing attenuation and SNRM figures at least.
3. Is the bell wire connected on any of your phone/alarm wiring?
PS an extension taken before the master socket may be acceptable for phone use but it's a recipe for disaster with broadband.

Thank you.
Do you have anything more recent?
I'd definitely look at making sure that you're connecting to your master socket, trying to use a different filter and making sure that all of your sockets (that are used) are being filtered.
May also help to try optimising your MTU and rWin settings.

Thanks for the response - I will run BT speedtester when I get back home as well as looking at optimising.
My set up is Master Socket running one filter with an adsl line to the router and my phone running off of the other slot.
HP - my burglar alarm feeds direct into the master socket - it doesn't slot into the plug on the front so I would assume that it is a hard wired filter. Will check the stats later. What do you mean by point 3 re bell wire?

I would assume that it is a hard wired filter.

Don't assume - verify as requested earlier. ASSUME makes an ASS of U and ME as the old saying goes.  Cheesy

Re: Slow BB speed - any advice welcome

Thanks for all responses but the problem has resolved itself  Embarrassed
As noted I removed the Sky lead from the filter on Friday, and last night when I checked my speed was up to 3.5 meg again - seemingly the exchange has corrected itself - am getting Sky out to look at it. I presume that 3.5 is a suitable figure given my line speed is 4.8?
That still doesn't answer the sporadic drop out when the phone is in use but I will keep an eye on that.

May I point out that the speed tester at http://www.speedtester.bt.com has been out of order since 3rd October (see thread at http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,69050.0.html) and still seems to be so.

It's working for me bml, I've been using http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ successfully over the last week. If your using Vista it does give a 'Change to page colour' or something similar message, but does then work
