Should my IP profile be higher?

I had some problems after changing to ADSL2+ about a month ago. I was having problems with low SNR at night & had to reboot the router every morning to get up to speed again. After browsing the forum for help I've upgraded the firmware, changed all my filters and removed the ringwires and everything seems OK now. However, my IP profile at one time was 13000 kbps, it dropped to 9000 kbps for a day & then changed to 10000 kbps but it hasn't gone any higher.  My downstream rate has been at 14330 kbps for over a week now, so should it go back to 13000 kbps & if so how long does it take? Do I or Plusnet need to do anything to change it?
My router stats are:
DSL Status:    Connected
DSL Modulation Mode:    ADSL2+
DSL Path Mode:    Interleaved
Downstream Rate:    14330 kbps
Upstream Rate:    448 kbps
Downstream Margin:    11 db
Upstream Margin:    27 db
Downstream Line Attenuation:    20 db
Upstream Line Attenuation:    4.5 db
Downstream Transmit Power:    11 db
Upstream Transmit Power:    22 db
I also connected to the test socket yesterday & the downstream rate was exactly the same (so could I be on a banded profile?) but the downstream margin increased to 15db.

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

Hi LynnB,
I'm afraid your BT profile is still set to 10000 so upping this on our side would make no difference I'm afraid. Getting the BT one to update should be possible - if you power the router off and on once a day between 10am and 3pm you should find that the resyncs train the exchange equipment and hurry the change along. Then if it doesn't update on our side we can up it for you.

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

Thanks Matt, I'll try that and see what happens. I know my line was flaky to start with but it seems OK now. My router doesn't give me 'up time' figures so I'm not 100% sure. Can you let me know if it's still dropping & can you see if I've been put on a banded profile.

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

Hi Lynn,
Your connection has been up for over 24 hours now without a drop so things are looking good. As regards the banded profile, yes one has been applied but it's between 7Mb and 14Mb so won't be getting in the way here. We can remove it though if you get the connection to a state where you're syncing at 14Mb pretty much constantly.

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

I'm glad to hear my connection's OK. I might get back to you about the banding later. I'm not too unhappy syncing at 14Mb as it's pretty close to the maximum I got which was 15226 kbps. Would it be the banding that's keeping the connection stable? If so I guess it might be better to leave it on.
Another thought - will the banding stop the profile increasing?

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

It won't necessarily keep the connection stable itself, but it should stop you connecting at a speed that would be unstable on your line so I'd agree in that it's worth keeping it on. With regard to the profile increases, it will stop the profile increasing any further than 14000 but as you're at 10000 at the moment that won't be an issue. As I said, if you do keep syncing at the top end of the profile we'll request that the banding is removed for you.

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

i'm sorry to report that things aren't going to plan  Sad
I've been turning the router off once a day as suggested by Matt to try & boost my profile, but the opposite has happened!  I'm still syncing at a constant 14330 kbps but when I turned the power on again today the profile had dropped to 5500 as the BT test shows. It was still at 10000 earlier this morning.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
Download Speed
9087 Kbps

0 Kbps                         7150 Kbps
                              Max Achievable Speed
Download speed achieved during the test was - 9087 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 1000-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :14328 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 5500 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 11.2:23.32:65.48 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.

Please can you explain what is happening - I wanted the profile to go up not down!!!

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

Hmm. Well the few disconnections that caused the initial drop were on the 13th, if all the resyncs since then were your own then it shouldn't be affecting the profile. I'm afraid you might get a better result keeping it connected for 3 days, then we can remove the banded profile which should also reset your own. I'm sorry that my advice had the opposite effect, but that's the only way we know of to hurry a profile update 😕

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

Hi Matt.  The initial drop to 9000 was on about the 6th, before that it was 12000, and it went up to 10000 on the 8th.  It was on the 6th that I changed filters & removed the ring wires which seemed to solve the problems I'd been having - each morning my router would say the Downstream Margin was 2147483647 db and my speed would be really slow until I rebooted the router.
Since I made the changes I haven't been aware of any loss of sync apart from when I've rebooted the router once a day (on the 9th, 14th, 15th & today), or disconnected it to plug it into the test socket (on the 13th).  If the connection has dropped more often than that then I must still have a problem somewhere. Can you let me know if there have been more resyncs than that.

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

Hi LynnB,
Here's a visual representation of your disconnections as we see them:
<img src="http://ccgi.psmith12.plus.com/visradius/generated/image12766962049976.png" />
It looks like there are one or two extra connections but they seem to be happening at the same time as you disconnecting the service.

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

That looks good - I'm pretty sure the disconnections are all down to me so the line seems stable now.
I think there may have been a problem with the BT speedtester earlier - I've just done another test and the profile is back to 10000 again, and the speed hasn't been that high for a while either!

Download speed achieved during the test was - 10137 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2000-21000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :14328 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 10000 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 16.21:25.67:58.12 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.

I'll leave it connected 24/7 for now & see what happens.  Do you think it's safe to remove the banding now or should we wait for the profile to increase first?

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

We can request the profile removal but it's not worth doing so until there's been a solid 3 days of connection at the top end of the profile as otherwise it won't be accepted I'm afraid. Soon as that's recorded though I'll make the request for you Smiley

Re: Should my IP profile be higher?

OK thanks Matt. I'll leave things alone & hopefully it will stay connected for 3+ days  Smiley
