SNR and DLM

I have had a steady connection for the last 8 months at a 6db SNR
however last month the DLM decided to drop this to 3db, i thought at the time that this was not a good idea as the number of CRC errors were excessive, sure enough this week the DLM agreed but has now set the SNR to 12db.
Result is that i now have no errors at all but my sync speed has dropped by a large amount.
Is it possible on plusnet to get a fixed SNR of 6db or will i have to go through the reset loop. Cry
thanks
Mike

Re: SNR and DLM

We can only request DLM to be fixed if a fault is open, I could try an SNR reset but I don't want to do that after seeing your connection logs. Are you turning the router off for extended periods at all?

Re: SNR and DLM

Adam did not say this explicitly but if you do turn the router off when not in use, you need to stop doing this (for a while, at least).

Re: SNR and DLM

Hi Adem
SNR has now dropped back to 3db again  Cry
Now i know that its recommended that you leave the router permanently on.
but for "reasons" i have to turn it off at night or when im not in the house.
Totally irrelevant i know, but i was with C&W LLU for 5 years before joining +net
same connection pattern but the SNR stayed at 6db the whole time.

Re: SNR and DLM

Looking back through your posts it looks as though your sync speed is well below 8128kbps and as such it might be worth asking to be put back on ADSL1 on 21CN - this has a minimum default noise margin of 6dB so you wouldn't have the 3dB problem again

Hi jim
well at 6db its around...
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 443 / 7,104
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:26.5 / 43.5
which is ok as long as it stays at 6db as i has for the last 8 months.
I dont get any disconnections at that SNR and sync.

Re: SNR and DLM

It's not for me to ask why so I won't but turning the router off will I'm afraid lead to problems so you might want to consider if there's any way whatsoever that it can be left on. If you do have any concerns about safety as a reason to why you're turning it off when out do let us know as we'd like to try and belay any such concerns Smiley

Re: SNR and DLM

I think Adam probably means allay rather than belay, although belay meaning cease or ignore (as in "Belay that order") sort of works in context.

Re: SNR and DLM

maybe the context wasn't 100% right but I would like to cease or stop any concerns that could be unwarranted which is how I meant that Smiley

Re: SNR and DLM

Hi Adem
fully understand what you were trying to say, ( but funny as i used to do rock climbing, i think you have been watching too much Star-Trek)   Smiley
My choice in that i will not leave the router on, so i will have to live with the consequences.
I just dont understand why the stupid BT DLM has suddenly decide after 8 months to drop my SNR to 3db which is too low for the line.

Re: SNR and DLM

Hi Mike
I can't understand why it's taken so long to drop the SNR down that low, I can try and reset it for you but I can't promise that it would stay set where we'd like it to be I'm afraid.

Re: SNR and DLM

My ADSL2+ connection settled down at fastpath and 6dB D/S for a few months, but after going away for a long weekend the DLM decided to apply D/S interleaving and a default SNRM of 3dB, which dropped to 1 or even less during the evenings and generated massive numbers of errors.
Shouldn't have to do it, and I think it's not recommended by Plusnet, but I tweaked the target up from 3 to 5 via Routerstats and have had no problems ever since, although interleaving refuses to switch off automatically. Probably worth a try if Routerstats/your router supports it - I can't speak for others but in my case the DLM seems to be too aggressive/optimistic/whatever for my connection.

Adem
dont worry its holding at 3db so far must be the nice weather,  Smiley
but i agree with JayG  "DLM seems to be too aggressive/optimistic/whatever for my connection” all of a sudden.
but thanks for your help, lovely for once to have an isp with real online support.

Re: SNR and DLM

Plusnet can disabled DLM as simple as that.

Re: SNR and DLM

Before the introduction of DLM and "Up to 8 meg broadband" we were all on a fixed download rate.  From memory, I think you could contract for  0.5 Mbps or 1 Mbps or 2 Mbps download rate but I'm pretty sure  2Mbps is as fast as you can go without DLM.  So to "disable DLM" would restrict you to 2 Mbps, and that is only if that option is still available.
