SMPT problems using Outlook 2003

Hi I have just joined Plusnet and broadband working fine. Unfortunately I can't get e-mail to work. I have been through tutorials for Outlook  2003 several times and am now feeling incredibly dim.
My settings are:
e-mail address = info@username.plus.com
POP3 = mail.plus.net
SMTP= relay.plus.net
The pop part works fine but the smtp part does not work.
I also still have an old freeserve (orange) email account and this work perfectly within the same outlook 2003 software.
I use avast for anti virus and have turned this on and off incase of firewall problems, etc
Any help appreciated,
Rod

Re: SMPT problems using Outlook 2003

Have you got authentication turned on for the SMTP server?
If you are connected via Plusnet it isn't needed. You can use authentication, mainly for if you are connected via a different network (e.g. on holiday) - you use the same main account username and password as you use for the portal - NOT a mailbox login.

hi authentication is turned off for the SMTP server. I have already tried it turned on just in case.

Re: SMPT problems using Outlook 2003

Have you checked that under More Settings, Advanced, This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) is OFF?

Re: SMPT problems using Outlook 2003

You could try telnetting to port 25 to see if anything on your side is blocking it:
Click the Start button, then RUN
In the RUN prompt, type 'cmd'
In the new window, type 'telnet relay.plus.net 25' then press enter.
You should see a response that begins with "220." which confirms the port 25 is open.
Let us know what happens when you try that please.

Re: SMPT problems using Outlook 2003

Sorry to jump in here but I'm having the same problem ( Outlook 2003 also). Receiving fine but can't send, getting this error message:0x8004210B the operation timed out waiting for a response from sending (SMTP) server.................
Done the telenet to port 25 & I'm getting the right response - 220 etc.
Forgot to say I've raised a question.

Re: SMPT problems using Outlook 2003

If telnet is getting the correct response that smacks of a problem at your end. Probably virus protection or firewall acting up.

I think Spyware Terminator was the guilty party. It was updating for an awful long time so I closed it & hey ho email worked again, my problem now is why the update is taking for ever!

Re: SMPT problems using Outlook 2003

Does it really say "…SMTP server 212.129.....", or should that be "212.159…"?
Command "nslookup relay.plus.net ns1.force9.net" returns 212.159.(8 and 9).107 for me.
Getting that error from telnet suggests antivirus or a firewall on your computer or the router is blocking the connection. Are you using the Windows firewall or a different one?

Re: SMPT problems using Outlook 2003

I have also been having what sound like the same problems since about midday yesterday (using Outlook 2003). Up until then everything was working fine, but on both send and receive I am getting messages like this:
Quote
Task 'PlusNet Judy - Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I raised a ticket yesterday, but I haven't had any response yet...
I have tried to telnet as suggested and I get no response at all - the command prompt window is cleared and then it just sits there...
I'm not sure how relevant it is, but this is what I get with nslookup:
Quote
C:\>nslookup relay.plus.net
Server:  cdns01.plus.net
Address:  212.159.6.9
Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    relay.plus.net
Addresses:  212.159.8.107, 212.159.9.107

Re: SMPT problems using Outlook 2003

Have you tried with all spyware/firewall/anti-virus disabled?

Re: SMPT problems using Outlook 2003

Yes, I just tried that and got the same behaviour.
I also tried running Outlook's "Test Account Settings" and got these errors:

  • Send test e-mail message: The specified server was found, but there was no response from the server.
Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct.
To access these settings close this dialog, then click More Settings and click on the Advanced tab.

  • Log into incoming mail server (POP3): The specified server was found... (same errors as for send)

I have also re-checked my email settings vs the website and they all look OK. The Advanced tab mentioned shows the following settings:

  • Incoming server (POP3): 110, SSL checkbox OFF

  • Outgoing server (SMTP): 25, SSL checkbox OFF

- which looks correct as far as I can see (and I haven't changed the settings since I set them up a couple of years back anyway).
