Routing peers down?

Trying to connect to Plusnet services from a BT connection is failing - are routing peers down?

Tracert (from the BT Connected PC) to imap.plus.net / pop3.plus.net / plus/net all fail...

Re: Can't send email to Plusnet / Metronet / Force9 etc

Do we know what was done to resolve this? This forum thread came up on a search of the ip 212.159.9.200, which we're getting the same connection issues with.

H=mx.avasin.plus.net [212.159.9.200] Connection timed out
Connecting to mx.avasin.plus.net [212.159.8.200]:25 ... failed: Connection timed out

Bob, would the ops team remember what they did so it resolves it for me and others too? thanks

Re: Routing peers down?

Funny you asked that, Kevin - I seemed to loose the ability to get anywhere on the net around 08.20 this morning - but a reboot of the laptop appeared to rectify the issue.

Done some more tests - trying to ping from my PN connection back into the BT network to a point in the above TRs done from the BT connected PC...

This rather points to a problem within the BT network - is anyone at Plusnet able to point BT at this please?

What is rather odd is that both of these BT to Plusnet and Plusnet to BT route tests indicate failure (or congestion?), yet I'm able to establish a Teamviewer session (albeit unstable) between the PCs (that's how I ran the remote trace routes). Crazy3

Re: Can't send email to Plusnet / Metronet / Force9 etc

It is the same, exactly the same ip etc. Same results, same trace.

The other thread is about pop and imap connections, which is similar but not the same.

Thanks for your input.

Re: Routing peers down?

@jab1 I had a similar problem yesterday, unable to access the internet, but I traced it to a DNS issue. I had to manually add a DNS server into TCP/IPv4 & it was sorted.

Re: Routing peers down?

Our problem is that we can't email plusnet email accounts from our servers. Others using different providers also have the issue "connection timed out" which was mentioned on the other thread before it got merged with this.
Gmail accounts can email plusnet fine but others can't.
It's been happening for a few months.

Re: Routing peers down?

Two things being discussed here.

@ukguy1, I suspect some of our intrusion prevention appliances are blocking your connection attempts but I'm waiting to have that confirmed (will get back to you next week).

@Townman, I'm not sure that trace is telling us anything. I get the same from my BT connection:

Tracing route to mail.plus.net [212.159.9.81]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms home.gateway [192.168.1.254]
  2 * * * Request timed out.
  3 * * * Request timed out.
  4 12 ms 11 ms 12 ms 31.55.185.188
  5 11 ms 12 ms 11 ms core1-hu0-19-0-1.colindale.ukcore.bt.net [195.99.127.138]
  6 * * * Request timed out.
  7 * * * Request timed out.
  8 * * * Request timed out.
  9 * * * Request timed out.
 10 * * * Request timed out.
 11 * * * Request timed out.
 12 * * * Request timed out.
 13 * * * Request timed out.

However communication with the mail server is still possible:

C:\Windows\System32>telnet mail.plus.net 110

Re: Routing peers down?

@bobpullen,

In the case I'm looking at, communication with the mail servers was failing ... which is what lead to the testing which showed no success in trace routing to PN servers.

Will check email connectivity again today - either needs a site visit or remote access.

Re: Routing peers down?

@bobpullen,

Well I'm confounded!!!

Checked out the other system - still unable to ping the imap.plus.net server from BT world.  Ran the telnet test and that was all fine.

Reset the passwords in the email client configuration  ... and all is now OK.  Can only surmise that at some point when there was a comms problem said owner did alter the passwords ... even though SWMBO told me she had not!!

Having become conditioned into realising that a password challenge all too often arises from a network connectivity issue ... not being able to ping the servers sent me off along the wrong track!

Thanks.

Re: Routing peers down?

Note: this should not be marked as fixed, as the problem we (and others) have, which Bob is investigating, is not fixed.

I originally said it was a different problem before someone decided to merge the threads.

Re: Routing peers down?

Hi any news on the blocks at plusnet? We are getting a lot of complaint about people not being able to emIl plusnet addresses.

This is also happening to other people on other isps.
The problem was resolved on the other thread last year before my posts got merged with this thread.

Do I need to go higher to get this resolved?
