Re:Router, just picked up a 172. IP Address and lost internet access

Thanks for getting back to me.
I've asked a member of our faults team to pick this up for you.  Hopefully we'll have some good news before too long.

Re: Router, just picked up a 172. IP Address and lost internet access

Well this sort of explains the 172 question I asked in my fault post.
Looking at your problem I suppose only waiting 5 days is nothing?  Sad Sad
Hope you get this sorted soon (as I do with mine)

Re: Router, just picked up a 172. IP Address and lost internet access

had this yday, when i believe a btw engineer was messing at the exchange or wherever
it was fixed eventually by doing a router power down and restart

Re: Router, just picked up a 172. IP Address and lost internet access

I would love that to fix mine but turning it off and on does not seem to work in my case Sad
So after having to wait 5 days for sombody to bother to look at the job properly and not just blame to poor users hardware. It looks like I will still be another 3 days without service  Angry

I would love that to fix mine but turning it off and on does not seem to work in my case Sad

And power-cycling your CPE is invariably rewarded with a minimum 3dB increase in the TARGET SNR, a corresponding reduction in sync rate and a lowering of the IP Profile - All courtesy of BT Wholesale's Destructive Line Management!

As you are receiving a 172.16.xxx.xxx IP Address on the WAN interface, that probably means that your login details are valid/recognised by BT Wholesale as valid.
I'm reasonably sure that if your login details were complete garbage, you'd get nothing but a slap from BT Wholesale's BRAS. I would love to test this theory (I'm reasonably certain that I have done so in the past...), but I'm now fully O2 LLU'd and DLM free!
But you can still test the theory...
e.g. non-existentusername@non-existentISP.net
And see what happens.
Good Luck!
ADDENDUM: When you have a 172.16.xxx.xxx IP Address, BT will automatically end the PPP session after 10 minutes on their ADSL2+ service (I'm sure it was only 7 minutes on ADSL). Does this happen?
Alternatively, you could try a known good/working username. e.g. LNNFN@plusdsl.net  + password.  (you'd have to contact Plusnet for the real details... But I don't want any usage charges incurred after 13:52 today, applied to my account).
You should (eventually) receive the following;
IP address 212.159.47.nnn - It's STATIC!

Wow LNNFN thanks for that. Unfortunately it got fixed before I could try any of those.
Thanks again Rob

Re: Router, just picked up a 172. IP Address and lost internet access

I'm awakening this old topic because the world has moved on and a lot of us now have fibre.
This happens periodically to me, generally in the early hours of the morning and always resolves itself without user intervention.
However, what is the best course of action with FTTC?
Rebooting the router just picks up the same IP.  Would rebooting the BTOR modem help?
A tortoise? What's that?
You know what a turtle is? Same thing.

Probably best to leave it alone and wait it out - certainly don't meddle with your open reach modem.  I have in the past had DLM applied to my line for a week after just a few uncontrolled disconnections of the BT modem.
